Terrified - referred for mole check

Hi, I've just been to my gp about a mole ? that my husband recently noticed on my back. Gp has sent for an urgent referral as he said he's concerned however cannot say what it is hence seeing a specialist. I've gone to pieces, suffer with severe anxiety unfortunately but my biggest fear is that I have no idea how long this has been there therefore in my head I'm presuming the very worst. Gp says it was large, it's about 1cm max, is this large ?? I'm beyond scared

  • Ah okay, well I really hope they come back to you quickly to get you booked in for the appointment.

And yes, unless you have anxiety, no one can understand how incessant the brain can be. I have been suffering from quite bad headaches which I know can be stress related, but of course my horrible brain is now concerned I have left it too late and that the mole could be melanoma that has metastasized to the brain. It's cruel what anxiety does really.

Well I shall keep you updated as to how I get on and hope you do the same. The good thing about these forums is that people are there to support each other. :)

  • To all those of you awaiting an appointment or biopsy results, can I just add that 75% of patients referred to dermatology are given a clean bill of health, either at the first appointment or after a biopsy. Many moles that are removed are dysplastic - precancerous - they look dodgy but have been caught early, so it's not always bad news! My brother, niece and nephew have all had dysplastic naevus removed whilst I've had 7 moles removed over the years and only one was melanoma.

The worst part is the waiting so I hope you all manage to find a coping strategy to deal with the long waits between appointments.

Good luck to you all and please let us know how you get on.

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you so much for your reassurance

  • Hi Susan

Really sorry you are feeling anxious and worried! I know exactly how you feel. Honestly, the wait for results is the worst part. I found it difficult to keep busy and not worry, but just be at peace that if it was anything, that they will have a plan.

to give you an idea of time, I had a mole I noticed on my left bum cheek, but it must have been there for at least a year... I was sick with worry as MM spreads quick. When I was diagnosed with Melanoma, it was 0.4mm thick (stage 1a), so basically just about to travel past the skin.. so although you worry how long you are waiting etc., you will honestly be OK and it's just good that you have done something about it straight away.

  • Hi there,

Thank you for your reassurance, it is the worry of how long its been there and when did it start to change etc  that im struggling with, as obviously I can't see it, my husband has checked it regularly since he first noticed it and said its absolutely no different to the first time so not sure what to think of that either,

This forum has been a great help, with everyone's wise words and reassurance

  • Hi Susan,

Thought I would update you. I have been to the hospital today about my mole and unfortunately it wasn't the best news.

Dr wasn't happy about it at all and advised they wanted to have it removed within 2 weeks.

I was also told that under no circumstances should I start my IVF treatment until we know what we are dealing with. Devastated is an understatement. Now I just need to hope that if it is anything nasty, its early stage nasty.

I had a call from the hospital about two hours after my appointment to ask me to come in tomorrow to have it removed. Feeling thankful they can do it so quickly but also concerned how quickly they are doing it. Only time will tell I guess.

    Hope you're doing okay. X

  • Oh bless you, listen your having it removed and quickly, everything is on your side and no doc would say go ahead with a new treatment whilst awaiting results of another.

They haven't said what it is yet just for you to have it removed so one step at a time and thank your lucky stars we live in a country where these things can be dealt with the very minute they are seen therefore allowing the best outcomes

Your results will be through asap and im sure you will be able to move forward with your plans

My app isn't until next Thursday, please do keep in touch and let me know how it all goes

    Take care

  • Thanks Susan. I think the waiting is going to be hard, but as you said we are really lucky they do deal with things urgently.

I will keep you updated and I hope that your appointment on Thursday goes okay too. :)
