Biopsy diagnostic meeting anxiety. Cancer?

Hi all.

My anxiety is sky high. I found a large lump on my left breast and the gp said it didn't feel like cancer  and sent me to the hospital  dr and I had a biopsy.

The consultant  also said I had swollen lymph.nodes  under my left armpit.  I've followed  this up and it's been discussed  at a diagnostic  meeting and will be discussed  at another meeting  next week and I will get the outcome  after that.  The thing is that both breasts hurt . I had recently  gone on to 100mgs hrt estrogen  patches  and that's when I noticed it but went back to 50mgs and things have slightly  improved. Breasts not as  painful but the lump  is still there and it's large.  My question is is that if it is cancer would they have got back to me immediately?like before the  week after next their 2nd meeting? I had to leave work this morning  as was sick with worry and have been in bed all day.Any advice would be  helpful thank you. X

  • Hello Stars007

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some concerns about your breast health. It's good to hear that you've already been seen at the breast clinic.

We know that this period of waiting for results can be difficult for many people and it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things. It's fairly standard for patients to have their results discussed by a multidisciplinary team and it's not an indication that you do, or don't, have a cancer diagnosis.

It may help you to know that the vast majority of people who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer so try to think positively for now.

You mentioned in your post that the pain you've been experiencing has improved since lowering your dose of HRT. The NHS website does list breast tenderness and swelling as a side effect of HRT so hopefully, this will continue to improve.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our team of nurses ahead of your appointment, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I hope you have some news soon. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks so much for your response. I'm feeling slightly less anxious and am trying to keep busy until I get the outcome end of  this week ,beginning  of next. I've got a burning sensation  in both breasts  but I think I'm over conscious  of any feeling there at the moment.  I'm also dropping  soya milk out of my diet as I read that can have some effect on women's hormones. The positive thing to come out of this is that I have more empathy for anyone with health fears or illness -more so now.  I'm hoping this is hrt related. I feel superwell  and no other changes. Fingers crossed! I will update here. Thanks so much. Natx

  • Hello. Thanks so much for your response.

I finally got m6 results face to face today.

I've got a cancerous  tumour  in my left breast.  They're not sure if it's spread.  Next  appt is urgent mri then a lumpectomy and removing two lymph  nodes under  my arm and breast  lump them 3 weeks radiotherapy  daily. I'm relieved  to know what it I'd. I may have to have chemo.  There's a 1 in 20 chance.  8 feel surprisingly  calm.
