Urgent referral to breast clinic. What will happen?

I've been given an appointment for urgent referral, I was told it could take 2 to 3 hours and to take someone with me. Will I be told the likelihood of it being breast cancer or not on the day? I am 27 and have developed a lump on left side, inversion of the nipple and discharge. When I saw my GP he put me straight in for an urgent referral.

  • Hello liz2022

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some recent concerns about your breast health and that you're now waiting for n appointment at the breast clinic. It's understandable that you may have questions and concerns.

I'd suggest having a look at this blog post on the Breast Cancer Now website which explains what happens at a typical breast clinic appointment.

Sometimes a clinician is able to give a definite diagnosis of cancer on the day but most often if cancer is suspected the Consultant isn't able to confirm this until biopsy results are returned. The important thing to remember here is that the vast majority of people who attend breast clinics are not diagnosed with cancer so try and think positively about the appointment.

If you want to chat things through with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Keep in touch liz2022 and let us know how you get on.
