Biopsy results

Currently waiting for biopsy results done on thyroid (app this Thurs) and the wait has been some what been testing (2 wks for results).

Today I get a call stating im scheduled for surgery next week and need a CT scan before hand. I told person who rang I had yet to have review and she said oh all will be discussed then.

My mind has now gone into overdrive. Have they found something as they did say suspected cancer or are they removing as the 3 lumps, 3cm in size are causing other issues.

Was in work and on a coffee break surrounded by colleagues when I received the call and due to the shock failed to ask the appropriate questions.

I haven't told my girls yet until I know exactly what it is I'm dealing with as I don't want to worry them as im a single mum.

Things are moving so quickly my head is in a spin.

  • Hi [@DeeDee46]‍

i had another follow up today. I have to go get the other nodule biopsied to confirm it is benign before going ahead with surgery. It will determine if they do a partial or total thyroidectomy.

I cannot believe how fast this journey is going for you!
They are definitely on the ball but you haven't had it easy.
it just shows you they don't know the extent of things until they are in there. It's a lot to get your head around.

important thing is to stay rested and not to overthink. It's out of our control unfortunately, we rely so much on our healthcare professionals. you will have good days and bad days but positive thinking. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Keep us updated.

  • Hi [@DeeDee46]‍

    How is your recovery going?

[@CazStu]‍ did you get your biopsy results? Hope you are further forward now.

    Rachel

  • Hi [@rachel25]‍

How are you? Any more results re the other nodules. Any new decisions or plan of action. And [@DeeDee46]‍ How are you recovering. I hope the breathing is easier.

I have just been for pre op and have my partial thyroidectomy booked in for Monday 14th. Having been put back on the cancer pathway back in February - it's about time!!! Not going to lie though, I'm really nervous. X

  • Hi [@CazStu]‍

Yes, the second nodule came back indeterminate as well so I will be getting a total thyroidectomy. I'm still waiting on a surgery date, hopefully hear soon.

Im glad to hear you are booked in for surgery. Hope you're feeling ok about it, take it easy and pray all goes well.

  • Hi [@CazStu][@rachel25]‍

Multifocal Papillary Thyroid cancer was diagnosis. Had an appointment re radioiodine treatment for which I am now just waiting for a date. Will be a hospital stay any where from a cpl days to a week until I'm deemed safe to go home where I will need to isolate for a period of time.

Have review appointment regarding outcomes of the surgery tomorow, not going to lie feel a tad apprehensive as I've learned new things every time I've seen a consultant. But this will be the first time I've seen my original consultant.

ENT appointment this Sunday for camera. My breathing is easier and my voice a little better.

I'm glad to hear that you are both getting sorted although a difficult time heading into the unknown. Waiting is the difficult thing, as there is lots of that.

    Take care x

  • Hi [@DeeDee46][@rachel25]‍

    We're all waiting aren't we!

DeeDee I hope your appointment with the consultant goes ok. It's a shame your diagnosis and what that entails seems to be drip fed to you. From my past breast cancer experience, once I had a diagnosis and plan of action, I felt somewhat better and just wanted to get in with it. You must be frustrated that it doesn't seem as cut and dry as that. I just wondered if you could share any tips re surgery and what to expect after.

Rachel. I'm frustrated by the whole indeterminate results of the FNA. I'm wondering how fit for purpose it is as a diagnostic tool. Having them and waiting for the useless results has done nothing for me other than delay the treatment.

    keep me posted ladies.

sending heaps of well wishes xx

  • Well all went well at review he confirmed everything that I had been told in his absence. He feels confident that it has all been removed and any remaining cells will be killed by radioiodine treatment.

The surgery itself was fine, I had a sore throat for which I drink plenty fluids. You may have a drain in like I did but more of a hinderence when nipping the loo than anything. If you have one it wil be taken out after a day or two. Also your calcium levels may dip so be prepared for an infusion or two of calcium. I needed 2, had pins and needles and numbness in lips, tongue hands and feet a tell tale sighn levels are low.

Your neck will be sore, don't suffer take pain relief that they offer you. I was fine just had paracetamol intravenously as couldn't swallow properly for a few days.

As for eating I managed food by choosing foods that I could mash up and swallow that way. The sooner you can be up about eating drinking and visiting the loo the quicker you get out (in my opinion).

    Take care

  • Hello to you both.

I have my op next Wednesday for a total thyroidectomy. Little nervous, hope all is straight forward and only need the one night stay in hospital. Then the waiting begins again to hear my results.

    [@CazStu]‍ ‍

The indeterminate results are definitely frustrating, I don't feel they have delayed my treatment but want to know at this stage if it is cancer or not. How are you recovering from your surgery, I hope all is well.

    [@DeeDee46]‍ ‍

Thanks for the tips. Will be sure to get up, eat and drink as quick as my body allows me post op. I'm glad you have been reassured and hope you get your radioiodine treatment soon.

    Keep us updated.

  • How are we all [@rachel25][@DeeDee46]‍

i recovered well from my demi  thyroidectomy and was back in work less than 2 weeks later. That pesky tumour had obviously made me feel quite unwell as I felt tons better soon after the op. Anyhow, I went for the results of the core biopsy today, exactly a month since the op and .... they're uncertain! Apparently my consultant thinks it's likely to be benign but there was something that made the test people suggest a multi disciplinary meeting to discuss my case! That's happening on Monday where they'll probably decide to get a second opinion from my local specialist cancer hospital!!! All very confusing and I'm now even more worried. Have I got something rare that isn't showing up in the usual way? Is it early secondary breast cancer? I was told to go away and enjoy Christmas- easier says than done!!!

  • Hello [@CazStu]‍ & [@DeeDee46]‍

[@CazStu]‍ im glad you recovered well. Although an uncertain result isn't very reassuring. I hope you had a lovely Christmas and happy new year. Are you any further forward now? It's very hard not to worry, especially with your history.

I had my total thyroidectomy. Was in hospital for one week due to low calcium but otherwise all went well. I am still on calcium tablets, getting weekly bloods done as my calcium isn't stabilising at all. I got my op results and it turned out to be follicular thyroid cancer. She said it was a PT2 whatever that means. I got my results the week of Christmas and awaiting a follow up to discuss further. They are talking about referring me for radioiodine treatment. Im experiencing all symptoms of hypothyroidism, they told me my TSH is high, so I'm feeling very run down but they won't touch my thyroxine dosage yet.

    Take care
