Lump in left breast (lower outer quadrant)

Found a lump in left breast few weeks ago and has now got bigger. No pain or tenderness. Can slightly move it between two fingers. Had doctors appointment yesterday who has referred me fir a 2 week urgent referral to the breast clinic. Is this normal procedure or should I be worried?

  • Hi Yes it is normal procedure that if you feel a lump or notice any changes that you see your GP about they refer you under the 2ww. I have had 3 over the past decade One turned out to be a cyst which was aspirated, second was my right breast lost its mass and shrunk by 2 cup sizes no abnormality found, 3 referral was after I felt a pea in my armpit, 2ww to breast clinic, breasts still have cyst but all under 10mm and the armpit pea is an enlraged lymph gland that has normal morphology (it looks exactly as it should but just enlarged) the breast consultant asked me to attend yearly for mamograms via the GP but when i requested this to the GP she said a lot of paperwork and family history etc. I was recovering from covid so didn't persue it but will be doing it soon. Advice for yearly was because of family history.  Dont worry about the referral most turn out to be something simple, cross each bridge as you get to it

    take care

  • Thank you for the reply. Hoping it's nothing just can't shake the feeling of dread and worry. Hope your ok. X

  • Hi Hmr, it is very natural to have that feeling of dread and worry which is sometimes for some people a relief when they know what they are dealing with beacause you then have a forward plan. While you are waiting you feel you have no control over the situation. I had an appointmentin July which is a yearly check up for a stable optic pathway Glioma, it stabilised after radiotherapy but have yearly checks because it is still there, they tend to be very slow growing tumours and at the moment the consensus is to leave it and watch with MRI every 3 years. I went to see my gp about a very small lump on my lower right eyelid margin which I had for a few years but had recently started to change, he looked at it, googled some images, said pretty sure it was benign and prescribed antibiotic eyedrops. I didd't feel overly confident about this as there were no signs of infection but as I had my tumour review due in July I thought a couple of monthe would be fine. At my review I mentioned it and the neuro ophalmologist looked at it through special lenses and slit lamps, her conclusion was she was reasonably sure it was a Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of lower eyelid margin. She fast tracked me to another hospital which specialises in eyes whilst I was still there and said the other hospital would contact me soon. A week later I was seen by an oncologist, more tests and special lenses I think called a dermascope, straight round for a CT and bloods, Was told BCC but transferred to the same eye unit but attached to a bigger teaching hospital because I have adrenal insufficiency caused by radiotherapy damage to my pituitary gland ( I had radio many years ago and the advancements today are far more refined and targeted) This morning I am going in for my first surgery to take biopsies to subtype the BCC ( I didn't realise there were quite a few) this will then allow them to stage it and work out a treatment plan. Most common is a Mohs proceedure but also radiotherapy. My oncologist called on tuesday to touch base and give me the mobile number of my named cancer nurse, I have oncology follow up in 3 weeks and she's expecting the results of todays surgery by then. So a bit of a long story to get to the part where I want to say I do understand about the waiting for results bit but I have decided to knit everyone a hat for christmas so will be filling time with learning a new skill and watchung tutorials online in between my usual default stress anxiety reliever of trying to do unnecessary chores. I will follow your thread so I can see how you are getting on
