Lump 2 months after mastectomy with implant reconstruction

I'm writing on here to see if anyone has experienced the same thing as I have? I had my double mastectomy just over 2 months ago and today have noticed a small hard lump near the scar on top of the implant. I have my follow up appointment on the 13th Sept but will call to try get one in sooner hopefully.

I just wondered if this could be scar tissue? My anxiety is through the roof. Any similar experiences would be so useful.

Thank you.

  • Hi

I had a mastectomy with no reconstruction and found a hard lump just above the scar line, probably around the same time a couple of months after the op.I was worried as well but the oncologist felt and said he thought it probably was scar tissue and sent me for an ultrasound. That confirmed it was scar tissue.

I highly suspect yours is too but you're doing the right thing getting it checked asap.

    Good luck x

  • Hi Taryn.

Totally understand your anxiety. Slightly different to you in that I had lumpectomy rather than mastectomy. Have a lump which I suspect is likely to be scar tissue but getting it checked out on 8th September.

Good to get these things checked but keeping everything crossed for you xx

  • Hi there,

Try not to worry too much.  I've had a small hard lump after my mastectomy (no reconstruction), and I was told it was scar tissue/fat necrosis by my surgeon when I saw her at a follow up.  Very probably yours is too.  Just get it checked for your piece of mind.

    Best wishes,

    Mary

  • Thank you so much for your response and for sharing your experience with me. I'll be in touch this morning to try book something in as can't wait for my follow up appointment on the 13th Sept. Thanks again x
  • Thank you. Good luck with your appointment on the 8th. X

  • Thank you Mary for your response  praying it is just scar tissue. The waiting for appointments and results is the worst !

    Take care x

  • Hi Taryn,

Just thought I'd check in and see how your appointment went last week? Hope it went well and you got positive outcome :-)

Mine was delayed until this morning - they think it's fat necrosis but am having a mammogram and ultrasound on 4th October to double check.

    Take care xx

  • Hello.

Thank you for your message. I had a bit of a nightmare as they couldn't bring my follow up appointment forward with my surgeon so I ended up seeing a nurse who said the same, she thinks it's fat necrosis but will send me for an ultrasound. I chased the ultrasound and they said it was a 6 week wait so I went private and paid for it. They said it looks like breast tissue residue / scar tissue and would send me for an mri to confirm. Finally saw my surgeon on the 8th and she said it definitely feels like scar tissue that's grown around a really slow desolvable stitch but will send me for an mri for completeness. That was 2 weeks ago today and unfortunately still waiting for an MRI date. I've been calling every day but because I have a shunt from a previous op years ago they need a disclaimer before they can book it in. I feel like every where I go I hit a blocker. I go to Thailand on the 31st Oct and not sure whether this will be done before then. I need to put my trust in the surgeon and listen to her when she says it doesn't feel sinister and feels like scar tissue. Looking forward to putting this behind me though. Gosh I hate how my mind is wired to always worry. I guess that's our lives now.

I'm glad they said that to you too and yes always best to double check with scans to rule everything out.

Let me know how you get on on the 4th Oct.

    Take care xx

  • Hiya. My wife is in a similar position. She sees the surgeon on the 9th Nov. Two oncologists felt the lump and said they weren't worried, but to check with the surgeon just for peace of mind. You read all about scar tissue alarming people, and how common it is, but when you're in that position, it's still worrying. It could have been caused by the op or the radiotherapy. Who knows!!

The best of luck to you, and here's hoping we both get the same news!

  • My surgeon did put my mind at ease thank goodness but yes will only relax once all checked properly but I feel a lot better since seeing her.

It is indeed so scary when it happens to you and constantly thinking about it is horrible.

Best of luck to your wife too. I'm sure will all be absolutely fine. Take care
