Colon cancer referred

After going back and forward to the GP over the last year I have been referred to the hospital after having blood in my poo amongst other things. I have just turned 31 and struggling with the worry that it could be cancer. I know more people are getting it young.

Was wondering if anyone had any kind words, experience or advice to try and keep calm over the coming weeks?

Thankyou

  • If it's any consolation, "more people" is still a very small minority. To the point that when I had a referral last year for rectal bleeding, weight loss, occasional loose stools (maybe once a week) and trapped wind, the specialist said that as I was only 40, the odds of bowel cancer were "less than 1%" and I would be "the unluckiest person in the world" if that turned out to be the explanation.

I don't know just what your symptoms are but there are lots of things that cause similar symptoms to bowel cancer - Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, polyps, diverculitis (which I have probably misspelled), even hemorrhoids or anal fissures, if your main symptoms are things like blood in poo. Most of those are way more common than bowel cancer among under 60s.

More than 90% of bowel cancer cases are in over 50s and I think the number in under 40s is significantly lower again. Like well under 5%.
