Lung cancer misdiagnosis

Hi

Im new to this and wondering if anybody has been in a similar situation... my Dad passed away the start of 2021 from lung cancer that had spread to his bones, brain, kidney, stomach, bladder and heart area. He went from being a fairly active man in his 70s playing golf a few times a week and looking after his grandddaughter to slowing down massively in 2020, the summer of 2020 when I was meeting up with him outside I notied he was struggling with walking, his breathing was shocking, wheezing, and he had pain in his right hip, he had not long maybe 5 years prior had a hip replacement so we sure it couldn't be that, in the Aug he went for annual bloods at his GP practice there was a slight abnormality but no action was taken, in the September his right shoulder that had been niggling became the most horrifc pain,he stopped driving he couldn't lift his arm, he lost his appetite and he basically became bed bound, he had a telephone appointment with a nurse practitioner who prescribed codeine and when he told her he had breathlessness and wheeze she said she wasn't allowed to listen to his chest so prescribed an inhaler, a couple of weeks later the pain in his shoulder was worsening she he had yet another telephone call with a different nurse who then saw him the next day, he told her of his breathing and wheeze and shoulder pain and she reffered him for physio, there were no face to face physio apps because he was not classed as red flag so again that was over phone and he was sent exercises in post, we rang NHS 111 later in October and he spoke to an out of hours doctor who couldn't understand why his practice were not doing more, the out of hours doctor sent an email to his practice to see him the next working day( they ignored this but scannned into his records) we then took him to a&E after his prcatice kept saying that there were no appointments even though we begged and pleaded, A&E then sent him back to hos practice, a GP finally rang early November, my mother suggests on the call she thinks its lung cancer, asked why he couldn't have a scan, she was told it was all muscular so an x ray wasn't needed, he was told he had a frozen shoulder, my Dad told the gP he couldn't swallow, open his jaw, had stopped eating, he was told to see a dentist and to contact physio again, physio were aware of his pain also and that he could not even attempt exercises, after gettinh nowehere with the GP on the call we rang 111 again, who once again sent another email for the GP to see him face to face and do some tests, again this was ignored and to this day they have told so many different stories, another call with a different GP late November still told frozen shoulder, another call with physio early December who said their soonest face to face was 2021, and by December 2020 he had lost stones in weight, was confused and bedridden so we pleaded once again after numeous attempts for a doctor to see him or come out, finally later December after months he was given a face to face, he had bloods taken and was sent for a chest x-ray and it turned out his collar bone had eroded completeley and that he had high calcium levels, we then rang an ambulance and on Christmas day 2020 he had a CT scan and found out he had lung cancer stage 4

After he passed away I decided after his funeral to look into things further it has been a nightmare dealing with the practice, i requested audio calls and I still have never received them all and I also got his records from 2010 onwards, i als got the emails from 111 who were s helpful and both were sent successfully to his practice.

To break it down had smoked for many years up until 2017 when he had such an awful chest infection he gave up with no help it was that bad

In 2014 he had a chest infection and given antibiotics , in 2015 he went with left shoulder pain and was given painkillers, late 2016 he started coughing again thats when he gace up, early 2017 he went to a walk in centre with a bad cough and was given antibiotics, this was scanned into his GP records, in early 2018 he had another chest infection, in may 2018 he had yet another chest infection and on his records it shows that there are creps heard on his lungs and faint wheeze,in July 2018 just 2 months later he has another chest infection and given more antibiotics with creps heard again, in the August he develops pain in his left shoulder and has a small stroke, in the october 2018 he is goes again for left shoulder pain and GP refers him for physio and he is told he has a left frozen shoulder, early 2019 he goes to a walk in again and is given more antibiotics for a chest infection and creps heard again & a wheeze, again this is scanned into his GP records, in June 2019 he has another chest infection and creps heard and more antibiotics , march 2020 because of covid he has a phone app with GP with another chest infection and is given more antibiotics. At no point trhoughout all these years with all the chest infections and crackling heard on lungs did they do one test, not one x ray or even test him for COPD

I have since been told from the practice that he was only showing signs of a frozen shoulder and it was all muscular and he was not presenting any signs of lung cancer, it was suggested by his family to the surgery in 2020 we thought he was dying of lung cancer and they said its a specfic shoulder pain you get with lung cancer, we have been told that shoulder pain is not a symptom of lung cancer and even with all the courses of amox in all of these years and crackling heard on his lungs he did not trigger needing an x ray.

I was shocked when I received his records and the amount of chest infections and crackling heard and how many years it went on for with no further investigations

I am just wondering if anyone has been in this situation? I feel like he was never even given a chance and sought help but it wasn't received

  • Hello Walker777 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

Thank you for sharing your dad's story with us. It sounds like he went through an awful lot and I completely understand your frustration. It's good you investigated things further to try and understand what happened. I hope that you will hear from other forum members who have been in this situation and that they will be along shortly to tell you how they dealt with everything. It's very sad what happened to your dad, that you feel he sought help and it wasn't received.

It might be worth getting in touch with the PALS and you can find out more details about who can help you when you feel there has been clinical negligence on this page. There is also information on our website on how to complain about healthcare services

I hope that you manage to get to the bottom of what happened. All this must be rather exhausting for you and I wanted you to know that the forum is there for you for support and to talk to others who understand how you are feeling at the moment.

    Best wishes,
