Thyroid nodules

Visited GP 4/7 after finding lump on throat which causes difficulty breathing and swollowing and had a whirlwind of app from ultra sound, bloods and FNA. Was told by radilogist during biopsy 3 nodules in thyroid found around 3cm and 1 in particular being of concern...cancer. Had biopsy done 9/8 and now have app 1/9 to discuss results. 2 week wait after a flurry of activity is making me feel anxious. I try to keep busy and have let close friends know who try to keep my spirits up but difficult.

  • Having had thyroid cancer, this probably isn't as bad as you might be thinking. Firstly, as I kept chanting to myself while awaiting my results "thyroid nodules are common, thyroid cancer is rare." The odds remain in favour of your nodules being completely benign.

And even if it is cancer, the name makes it sound a lot worse than it is likely to be. The specialist who diagnosed me told me, "ah, it's not the worst news in the world." The most common forms of thyroid cancer are almost never life threatening and they rarely use ongoing treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy to treat them.

It really is just a matter of having your thyroid removed. This means you have to take medication for life and from what I have read, something like 15%? of people may have difficulty getting the dosage right and may have some adjustment difficulty. For the rest, it doesn't change anything.

Even if it is thyroid cancer, it's very likely you'll be completely recovered well before Christmas.

  • Thank you for the info.

I should be grateful that in the grand scheme of things I have been seen very fast.

It is just the waiting isnt it.  Mind you being a single parent to 2 children I am kept busy in the mean time.
