Why is my 2ww melanoma referral being reviewed?

I have a mole on my leg which I saw a (private) dermatologist about around 18 months ago. At the time, they said it needed to be monitored and recommended I get it looked at again in 6 months time. If I'm honest, life got in the way and I pretty much forgot about it.

fast forward to 3 weeks ago, I realise that it's changed quite considerably. It's basically a completely different shape now. I felt like an idiot for not getting it looked at sooner and immediately rang the GP. I sent a comparison of what it looks like now vs 18 months ago and he agreed it had changed quite a bit and immediately said he'd refer me urgently to dermatology.

today I got a letter saying my referral was being reviewed, and to call the hospital if I've not been contacted by the 6th of October (which is a good 7 weeks away). I'm a bit confused because urgent referrals are meant to take 2 weeks, and now I'll have to spend the next 2 months worrying about this and not knowing if/ when they'll contact me.

does anyone happen to know why they could be reviewing it? Is it possible that the hospital has been the photos I sent to the GP and don't think it's urgent?

any advice / reassurance would be very much appreciated, I'm starting to get pretty anxious

  • Hi, I understand how worrying this must be for you. I'm waiting for further tests myself so I know how you must feel. I would go back to my GP and ask what's going on. I would have thought that 2WW means you'll be seen personally within 14 days, not just have someone look at your photos. I hope you can be seen very quickly to put your mind at rest. All the best. Amy

  • I have just had exactly the same thing happen I feel I'll with worry. I was told 2 weeks by gp. Two days later I got a letter saying I might hear by the 10th of October but if I don't I can start chasing it. I'm so upset about it.

  • Thanks for your reply! I thought about ringing the GP but I don't want to be a hassle and a suspect they'll tell me it's just down to delays and there's nothing they can do. It's odd because I've have a 2ww referral before which got dealt with within 2 weeks, and that was during the peak of covid :/

  • Sorry to hear you're going through the same thing! I hope it gets sorted, let me know how you get on xx

  • Hi,

I saw GP yesterday with a mole on foot that is bigger than average and has started to hurt. I have the NHS app and on that it says 2WW referral and the dermatologist will review this on Tuesday and then get in contact. Perhaps that's what will happen with you?

  • I will let you know if I hear anything, but I'm not holding out much hope. Iv had a 2ww appointment before and I was seen in 2 weeks. I'm shocked they would change a appointment from urgent to a 2month + appointment with out even looking at it.

  • In all my years as a melanoma patient I've never heard of a 'review'  of a referral. It may mean they are reviewing all referrals and placing them in order of perceived urgency, especially if they are behind due to Covid. At the moment, 2 week referrals are rarely meeting this target and may be a week or two later, but October is certainly not acceptable. I would double check with your GP that the referral wasn't sent as none urgent in error. If confirmed it was a 2 week referral, I would then contact the dermatology department to ask what 'review'  means. Don't be afraid to tell them your worries - sometimes they manage to find an earlier date! Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • I got another letter from them saying the department was very busy at the moment and they would be contacting me 'in due course' - so I can only assume this is the expected waiting time at the moment! Hopefully 7 weeks in an absolutely maximum and it will actually be before then. I can't help but worry that if it is melanoma the delay will make things worse (even though I've already been stupid enough to wait 18 months, so I guess what's a few weeks:cry:)

    thanks for your reply!

  • Hiya

i really understand where you are coming from. My urgent 2WW appointment took nearly a month to transpire. And then I only had a punch biopsy and waited nearly 3 months for the results. Unfortunately it turned out to be melanoma. I am now waiting a further month to get it removed to be staged. God knows how long those results will take. And then I will need further surgery after that.
So it will be 5 months that I have been waiting just to get this ticking time bomb removed. I feel so anxious with it all and very angry about it. The system is broken and unacceptable.

I hope everything turns out okay for you

  • Oh dear. I'm sorry to hear that your hospital has such a long waiting list. You can always ask your GP if there is another hospital with a shorter list (if you are prepared to travel). Or go for a private consultation if you can afford it. If they say it needs removing for a biopsy you can then ask to be transferred back under the NHS so you don't have to pay for private treatment. It may shave a week or two off the initial waiting time. Good luck, please let us know how you get on.
