Grandmother breast cancer

Hi all,

Sadly, my grandmother has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is having a lump removed and lymph nodes removed to check if it has spread.
She is my father's mum and so I wondered whether I could be tested for the gene or not or whether the gp would just tell me not to worry (seems to happen a lot?). Are there specific tests for this or is it only if a first degree relative has it?
Thanks!

  • Sorry to hear that your grandmother has been diagnosed with cancer.

Have you read the information that CRUK has?

    Here is the link:

    www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../genetic-testing-for-cancer-risk

A lot of people get cancer as they age and genetic tests tend to be done only when there are multiple family members with same or related cancer or single member in family gets cancer lot younger than average

My mother had breast cancer in her fifties and I was refused a genetic test for breast cancer and only offered one for a different cancer in the family (for which requirement was 3 related cancers) by which time my risk – based on my own cancer history – had already reached 100 percent.

I was a bit annoyed about the breast cancer at the time I filled in GP form as there are a lot of "gaps" in family history (owing to people dying young!!)

I could have had private tests but finally decided I would prefer not to know re breast cancer etc after genetic counselling.

In my family virtually everyone is affected by cancer now (other than the under 10s).

If you are worried about breast cancer especially you may wish to look at the main CRUK site to see how lifestyle choice can help to reduce cancer risks in general, including for breast cancer. x
