Symptoms

Hi

i'm 28 and currently pregnant (35 weeks) with my third baby. I noticed mucus coloured blood in my stools around 16 weeks pregnant and contacted my gp who done a qfit test which was positive (i expected this because i dipped it on some blood streaked stool) he then said lets do a repeat test which was negative so he put it down to bad pregnancy constipation and maybe a little cut in the bowel with being backed up or piles etc

i'm now 35 weeks pregnant have been constipated the whole pregnancy pretty much but i still notice the odd blood looking stool which has be really worried. Has anyone else had this is it just a pregnancy problem that should hopefully go away when the baby is out? Its never overly noticeable i usually need to really strain to see it with my torch on my phone and it's always on the stools not really toilet paper and 100% not in the toilet bowl and my stools are generally small pellets at this stage.

any advice would be great

  • Hello, sorry to hear about your symptoms. It is common to get piles in pregnancy so hopefully it is something benign causing your symptoms. If it is piles, it should go away after your pregnancy.

I think you should contact the GP again and update on your symptoms since it has been going on for quite some time. I think they should really do a rectal exam and blood test.

    Hope all goes well.

  • Hi Amelia

i've had lots of bloods and things all were good except just a tad low on folic acid at my 28 week appointment which was most likely also pregnancy related! The doctor also did have a quick look and didn't see anything external of concern but obviously couldn't really see inside! I'm hoping it's just something to do with the bad constipation which I have had the whole pregnancy in fairness but you just can't help but worry about the worst :(

  • Hi Lauren, Yes it is so easy to worry about the worst. That is a good sign that most of your bloods came normal. Hopefully it is just pregnancy causing this. Maybe try making dietary changes like increasing fibre and drinking plenty of water if you don't already. If it doesn't help after a few weeks, maybe contact them again.
