A lump in my breast

Hi

I’m looking for a little support and some clarity.

I'm in my mid 40's and over the past few months I have been feeling like my left breast has been feeling a little different. It’s been heavier, warm inside and at times I have found my nipple to be a little scaly.  Recently I found a small lump that has a small amount of discomfort when I pressed it.

I went to the Drs and they referred me to the hospital. The doctors said that they believe it may be a fibroadenoma.

I managed to get a cancellation and I had my hospital appointment this morning. To my surprise I received a mammogram, ultrasound and a biopsy all on the same day. I’m now feeling a bit sore, confused and very anxious.

I have been told that I will receive a phone call in 10 to 14 days as the MDT meeting is next Friday.

I have Googled MDT and its worrying me. Do they think I have cancer?

My left breast is a lot bigger than the other. Could this be just the sweeling from the core needle biopsy? Did anyone else suffer with this? The consultant commented on how one breast was a lot bigger than the other.

After my biopsy, I was asked to wait and see the advanced nurse practitioner. She sat me down and said that they had found a lump that was 1.4cm. She said that she thinks it’s a fibroadenoma. She really didn’t give me any more information than that. I see some people get given a date to go back for results and some get sent for an MRI. There was no talk of this and was just told I would get a call and if I hadn’t heard in that time to call them.

Would she tell me if she thought it was something bad or would she try and put my mind at ease?

I have looked on this forum and see lots of people saying that they have found a lump and have an appointment, but there doesn’t seem to be many coming back and reporting their results.

From what I can see, there are a lot of people saying that they have cancer after having the biopsy. Are they doing the biopsy to confirm cancer or to rule it out?

Thanks for listening to my story

  • Hi Pauline,

Sorry you're going through this. It's a stressful time!

Unfortunately I can't answer all of your questions, I can only tell you my experience.

When I went for my first appointment at the breast clinic I had no clue what to expect. I ended up having an ultrasound, biopsy and mammogram. I was 31 and they initially said that a mammogram wouldn't be very helpful as my breasts were too dense but I had one in the end.

I suppose the only way they can 100% rule out cancer is to take a biopsy.

In my experience, my consultant was very honest with me at that first appointment and she told me that they were 95% sure that they had found breast cancer, they just couldn't officially say so until the results come back. I know this has been the case with many other women too.

So if I were you, I'd take that as a positive, I don't think the consultant would tell you that they thought it was something other than cancer if they didn't think that was the case. Still, take someone with you when you get your results, just so you have support.

Good luck and I hope you get good news x
