Swollen gland/node under ear - referred for ultrasound

Hey all!

My anxiety is through the roof right now with this and i was hoping someone could put my mind at ease althogh im fearing the worst.

I'm 33 years old and in good health. For the past 3 weeks i have noticed a fairly obvious/hard lump/mass under my right ear, where the parotid gland is located. I can only feel it if i turn my head to the left but it's definetaly there. Visited the GP about it who has told me it doesnt seem to be anything sinister but wants to have it US to have a look.

Has anyone had this kind of lump and can anyone tell me that i am overreacting?

If it helps around a month ago i was having pain in the salivary gland when i was eating but it lasted a day and went away, i'm not sure if the lump  is associated with that because it's painless, even when i touch it.

Thanks all

  • Hello pt2002

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some health concerns. You did exactly the right things in seeing your GP and it's good to hear that they didn't have any immediate concerns about your symptoms.

We know that waiting for appointments and results can be a worrying time for many people. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your ultrasound. You could ring the hospital department and ask if they hold a cancellation list if you're able to attend an appointment at short notice.

In the meantime, try to keep busy and remain positive. Don't search Google looking for answers as it'll leave you feeling more worried. If you're feeling particularly anxious you might find it helpful to have a look at this information on the NHS website about managing health anxiety.

I hope that you have some news soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

I'm sorry to hear this. I was just wondering what your outcome was?

I've recently found a hard pea sized lump below my ear, under my jaw. It's not painful or moveable so I'm a little concerned.

    Thanks in advance x
