NHS are wonderful !

Had an appointment yesterday for a mammogram on the 2WW Cancer Pthway after finding a lump. From seeing the consultant, I then had a mammogram, an ultra sound, 4 samples of tissue via punch hole biopsies and 2 samples taken with needles biopsies plus 6 clip markers put in. I then had another mammogram and an X-ray of the chest wall. Slightly shaken up, I could then go home after 4 hours of tests. Every step of the way the staff were empathetic, kind and informative doing their very best to put me at ease. Feeling battered and bruised today and booked in to get the results next Wednesday but taken a moment or two to reflect on how wonderful our NHS are even with the additional backlog and pressures covid brought!

  • Hi Linda

I got 2WW appointment too and the staff were really lovely, chatty, put me at ease, told me how well I was doing while being prodded, poked, pressed and perforated! That was on 19 July and I should have gone back on 2 August for results but that's been put back to the 9th due to staff sickness. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers for a good outcome. Keep us posted.
    Take care x

  • Hoping your results are also positive on the 9th will be thinking of you! It's a long time waiting when it's on your mind isn't it, regardless of how positive you try to be.  Xx

  • Linda I was saying this exact thing to my husband today. I can't imagine a system where you have to worry about costs on top of worrying about your health.

And the staff have been lovely and caring and patient throughout my 2ww too.

I hope you feel OK after your biopsies, they definitely hurt a bit. Take some time to rest and I hope you don't have long to wait for results.

  • Thanks Daisy! I was in complete awe of the staff and hospital. The nurses in each department were young but all had a real sense of warmth about them as they hold you boob still while the doctor punctures it. What stood out for me was that I was there under serious circumstances, which they never once detracted from but all had a knack of making me feel ok. Special people with special skills.

I'm quite badly bruised over and under my boob today and around the side going up towards my armpit. Results next Wednesday.

  • I have found that the NHS is fantastic when you need things like two week cancer checks they give you first class service and care , l had a tiny 10 weeks prem baby the care for both of us at a London teaching hospital would have cost a fortune. I have always found that my care when I needed surgery ect has been great.
I'm a nurse and l remember telling a young patient who had just been diagnosed with aggressive cancer that the NHS is the best when you really need care and surgery he was facing a big operation.  I met him a year later on another ward and he said lve remembered what you said and after my  chemo, surgery ect your right. But as you said cut your finger or have a headache and take yourself to the pharmacy.
Nurses are really good at their job and show great empathy as nowadays they are specialists in their area of care and they are able to support their patients, and plan their treatment explaining the journey to the patients.
l hope you are not too sore breast are really tender l would take some analgesics and rest, take it easy l hope your results are available soon and benign. The waiting is really hard your mind does somersaults on the what ifs . Try to relax
    take care

  • I whole heartedly agree and thank you for what you do for your patients, the last couple of years can't have been easy for anyone working as part of the NHS. Being a teacher, I know a small part of how hard it has been.

  • I'm a teacher too, can't agree strongly enough with how caring and supportive the NHS is, even with Tories stripping funding right back, I am incredibly grateful for our health services!

How did your results go, Linda?  Hoping all is well.

  • I can't fault a single thing with the NHS.

I found out at my results that I have a grade 3 invasive carcinoma that's spread into my lymph nodes.

I am having surgery on 9/9 to remove it and all of my lymph nodes on the right side. Followed by chemo and 3 weeks radiotherapy. The plan is comprehensive and was in place when I got my results. My surgeon was confident and clear on what he was doing to do. The Macmillan nurses have been in touch already and been a great support.

All a bit gutting, I have just finished at my current school after 11 years and secured a new job at another school teaching Y5. I set my classroom up, spent two days with them and fell in love with the school. Yesterday I had to inform my head that I won't be there.

    Xx

  • Oh Linda, I'm so sorry about the new job. Will they keep it open for you?

I'd be interested to know how big your tumour is, if you don't mind me asking, and if it's hormone receptive and/or Her2-/+.
