Positive FIT Test

Hi all, I'm being urgently referred for a colonoscopy after a high FIT test result (above 200) I'm 49 and absolutely terrified. I've had IBS for about 20 years so I'm no stranger to digestive trouble. It was done as a blood test showed anemia - feeling tired, joint pain but no blood seen and certainly no weight loss! Any words of advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Hi, I hope you're okay, it is difficult to get abnormal test results. It's good they urgently referred you for a colonoscopy, most people referred this way don't end up having cancer but it's best to rule it out!

I had symptoms in March and I was expecting to just have hemerrhoids but went to the doctor and she said there was no sign of anything wrong. She handed me a test and said 'this looks for blood in poo' but I couldn't help noticing that the envelope said FIT test and I researched a lot.

She told me the next week that it came positive and I freaked out and she said 'but we already knew there was blood in your poo, so now it's just time to do a process of eliminating what it could be'.

That is really just what the test is. It looks for blood in poo. I'm guessing the higher the number the higher the amount, mine was 400 but the doctor didn't tell me (I found out from reading my medical notes) so I'm guessing she thought it wasn't necessary. I just saw tiny specks of blood when I did the test.

It doesn't give any indication to what's causing the bleeding or anything like that.

I was told I would be referred urgently but after 4 months, I still hadn't heard anything. I called the GP whenever I had new symptoms and recently she's decided to put me on the 2ww. I suggest you keep your GP updated if you have to wait long.

    Hope everything goes okay xx
