Referral to Gynaecologist after Ultrasound - Abnormal Result

Afternoon All,

Initially went to the docs as could feel a swollen area/lump in my lower abdomen, and a few symptoms (heavier than usual period, bloating, weeing more and feeling 'full', pain during sex, bleeding after sex etc) Doctor examined me, then I was referred for an ultrasound of pelvis (external and internal) which I had this Wednesday. I also got referred for a colposcopy which I'm waiting on a date for. (also got my regular app for my smear so it's been quite a week!!)

Got a call 2 hours after the ultrasound from doc to say I've been referred to gynaecologist. Should hear on appointment within 2 weeks. Had a follow up call from doc to say abnormal results, possibly cysts but they want to get it checked. I asked if it was or could be anything else but docs said until gynae checks they won't know.

Is that a pretty common response and timeline for these kind of checks? I keep hearing words like urgent referral, abnormal etc and it doesn't seem regular. However I know they have to check these things quick, which I'm feeling settled that it's moving fast in that respect.

I'm 37, no children and have had CIN3 cells removed with LLETZ treatment before back in 2011.

I'm not really sure how to feel, or what to do now. I don't feel I should be worried, but then don't know if that's my general coping mechanism to get through these things!

  • Hi Glitterkel and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry about the symptoms you've been experiencing but hopefully it won't be too much longer until all the tests have been carried out and you can get some answers.

I know this must be slightly scary with everything moving so quickly but try to stay calm until you know more.

Easier said than done I know, but hopefully some of our members who have been in similar situations will offer their support and advice to you soon.

In the meantime, we're thinking of you and will have our fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks Steph,

You are right, I'm feeling calmer now after doing some more reading.

Waiting for the referrals appointments to come through now which if it's anything to go by based on the last couple of weeks it should be quick.

Keeping my fingers crossed and seeing how it goes.

  • Have now had my letter through for the gynae appointment - will they be able to carry out appointment if I'm either on my period or it's just after? (Due, typically, around the time of app)

Waiting on the colposcopy appointment, and my recent cervical screening results in addition.

I've not had any other tests suggested as yet and wonder if the gynae will recommend anything and what usually would happen during first appointment so I can make sure I have all info I'll need.

  • Hi lovely, sorry for jumping into you're conversation. Gynecology may offer you a Hysteroscopy. They will ask list of symptoms.

You will need to have smear date, date of last period, any medication.

You don't need to cancel unless it's very heavy .. take care x
