Positive FIT test and my frustrations

Hi Im 21 Years old and I just need to vent.

Since April this year Ive been suffering with abdominal pain, Changing bowel habits and more recently bleeding. I have been constantly in and out the Dr trying to get test done and eventually they did, giving me blood test and a Faecal Calprotectin which all came back normal and was told I had IBS. I've struggled to accept this as deep down but who am I to argue with the results.

Recently I've been getting slight stool discolouration with parts being blackish and red blood which prompted me to ask for a FIT test which has come back positive. I assumed this would mean I would be fast tracked to see my Gp and then colonoscopy however Im being made to wait 3 weeks to see my GP as if its non urgent.

I feel so frustrated and let down.

Edit: I think it also worth noting that I've have been getting piles for few years now though the dr never been able to see it physically. I hope to God that its due to this...

Honestly makes me want to end it all now.

  • Hi Kflook,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the issues you've been experiencing.

If you're struggling, you are welcome to call our nurses to talk things through. You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

A positive FIT test doesn't necessarily indicate cancer - other things can also cause blood to appear. You have already had a lot of tests done and so the doctor will take all of this into consideration - and sometimes not being seen urgently can be a good thing.

There is a useful page here from Saga on how to deal with the uncertainty of waiting.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi it is so stressful waiting for tests, especially when experiencing ongoing symptoms.

I felt the frustration while reading through your post. I started noticing rectal bleeding in March so I called my GP and the first two doctors I talked to fobbed me off. I booked a face to face appointment with a different doctor and was so scared she'd fob me off.

Thankfully, she was better than I expected. The first thing she said was 'it really upset me reading your notes' (about the previous symptoms which I had explained to the first 2 doctors). She was proactive and got me to do FIT test, faecal calprotectin test and blood test. Like yours, only my FIT test came positive which I expected as I saw blood.

I got referred and I didn't hear from the hospital. I called them after a week and they said I am on the urgent waiting list which could take up to 20-25 weeks. I was furious but knew it's probably the effect from covid. My area currently has a record-breaking amount of suspected cancer referrals sadly.

I kept the GP updated and she referred me on 2-week pathway which I am very grateful about. I desperately didn't want to wait until October. Keep your GP updated about new symptoms even if it seems little because it might be important.

We are young so it is unlikely to be cancer. The FIT test only looks for blood and the blood can be caused by so many things like piles, crohn's disease, diverticulitis etc but it's good to rule cancer out.

Hope everything turns out okay for both of us.
