Unsure what to expect?

2 weeks ago, I felt a lump on the underside of my breast. Initially I thought it was perhaps my bra wire rubbing due to the heat and having large jiggly puffs. Upon closer inspection, I saw that it was infact internal and a large lump. I made an app with my GP and after a very thorough examination she referred me on the 2 week cancer pathway for investigation. I have an appointment this Wednesday for a mammogram and ultrasound.

Now since my initial app, I now have a large indentation where the lump is and my breast seem flatter where it should curve at one side. It feels a little tender if I like on that side also.

What should I expect at my appointment? Any advice or similar experiences welcome!

  • Hello Linda2022.

I'm sorry to hear you're waiting for an appointment at the breast clinic after recently finding a lump. We know that this period of waiting for appointments and tests can be difficult for many people, and it's understandable that you're feeling worried.

There's some great information on the Breast Cancer Now website about what may happen when you attend the breast clinic. It may help to keep in mind that the large majority of people who attend breast clinics are not diagnosed with cancer.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our team of nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice and support that they can.

I hope that the appointment goes smoothly on Wednesday and that the team can give you some reassurance. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
