Worried mum - breast lump found, referral next week

Hi

im a breastfeeding mum, I've had a nasty bout of mastitis over the last 6 weeks. It finally feels like it's clearing but my doctor found a lump last week. I've been checked multiple times over the last few weeks and this is the first time it's been mentioned. I've been referred to the breast clinic next week but I can't help but think the worst. The GP told me it could be anything, including cancer and she wouldn't want to even hazard a guess

I'm in an absolute tailspin about it. I've been ill for weeks and exhausted, my lymph nodes have been up, my armpit visibly swollen. But I've also had a continuous fever, and it really felt like I was on the mend. The trouble is I can't feel this lump, now every time I feel my breasts all I feel is lumps and bumps. I feel like I'm losing my mind I thought I knew myself pretty well, but obviously not.

  • Hello worringmum

How are you doing? Mastitis is awful and the fact you've coped for 6 weeks while breastfeeding is basically super human!

When is your appointment at the clinic?

Even if you can't feel the lump, or can feel loads of lumps now, the clinic is the right place to get it checked. They will fully examine you and they know what they are looking for

I know its easy to say but try and keep calm. Your breasts are going through huge changes with having a baby and breastfeeding. But your GP has beeen brilliant and done the right thing getting you checked by the experts.

Good luck, keep us updated x

  • Thank you. My appointments on Tuesday, I ended up seeing my usual GP yesterday as my anxiety was far too high. He checked me and couldn't feel any lumps but said to keep the appointment as its worth them checking as well. I feel less stressed after that.

  • That's good then, I'm glad your own GP has managed to help your anxiety a little.  Let us know how Tuesdsy goes for you xx
