Chest wall pain and swollen area

Hiya, I am writing for advice as have a lot of health anxiety. Around 6 weeks ago during a viral infection (lots of coughing etc) I happened to find a bony lump just below my collar bone on the left side. I wasn't in pain but have anxiety so went to GP who said was just a bone and nothing to worry about. However, following this I started to experience pain across my left chest around my shoulder and back. At times my chest is very tender to the point I can't lay a hot water bottle on it or when I go over speed bumps in the car it also aches. I would say it is more or an ache/tenderness than a pain. Went back to GP as was really worried and had chest x rays and bloods done which all came back clear. GP has said she isn't worried and thinks this is a muscular issue and to see physio. The pain now is intermittent and some days worse than others. Just don't know whether it's all in my head and I should seek help for my anxiety or whether to pay for more private scans to investigate further (although know these would stretch me financially.) Am awaiting a physio appointment from the GP surgery. The hard bone/lump is still there and just ache in front of my chest around shoulder area. Anyone experienced anything like this?

  • Hi helr14,

It's good to hear you've had this checked out, and it sounds like there is reassurance to be taken from the doctor's opinion and the number of tests you've had.

You have the option of asking for a second opinion from a different doctor if you remain concerned. However as you have had a number of tests done already, they may not be able to do/say anything different.

Try to follow the doctor's advice and speak to the physio, to see if they can help.

You mention seeking help for anxiety too - the NHS Every Mind Matters page is a useful place to start.

    Wishing you all the best,
