Lump after DCIS

Hi all.

I had a lumpectomy to remove DCIS back in March. All healed pretty well, clear margins, so all good.

Also had 5 rounds of radiotherapy which was fine. No real issues with burning or anything like that.

I have a 'lump' at the top of the lumpectomy breast that is about the size of a two pence piece. Edges not smooth and doesn't really move. I expect it is probably scar tissue but thinking I want to call breast clinic just to get it checked.

Am I overreacting?

I will probably call them but just wondering if anyone has had anything similar?

Thank you for reading :-) xx

  • Hi I would certainly give them a call, it's better to get any concerns checked out I think .

    Take care x

  • Hi there, sorry to find you on here.

I think you've already decided to get this checked out and that's a good thing.

Try not to worry too much as it could well be fat necrosis.  After my mastectomy I could feel a defined round lump and they said straight away it was that and it was nothing to worry about.  It can happen after surgery.

    Best of luck with everything.

    Mary

  • Hi Mary,

    Thank you for replying!

Yes I am not worrying too much as I expect its something non-sinister but as we all know it's best to check these things out just to be safe.

    Hope you are well x

  • Positive T, how are you, in my haste I didn't register!

Yes it's tough isnt it when they send you on your merry way after treatment.  I'm still pretty worried about recurrence and am having some counselling.  Every little niggle and pain, lump and bump you think it's coming back.  I've had terrible back pain lately.  I think just accepting that it's real and okay to feel this way so soon in our journeys helps, and we're not going mad!  I'm told we will come to an acceptance and will be able to move on, but I've found it very hard.

Ive got some small lumps too and they said it's definitely fat necrosis which I think is like scar tissue left by dead fat!!  Eww!  I suppose they know don't they, but a scan would be nice just to check.  I suppose we must stay vigilant.  My op was back in March too.  Have you had your 4 month review?  Mines delayed as the consultant got covid and I'm then on holiday.   Fingers crossed.
Sending you a hug, it will be fine.
    Mary x

  • Hi Mary,

Haha no worries! It's good to hear from you.

Like you say, every lump and bump and pain can bring it all back and I'm sure it's natural to worry and we probably always will but time will help I'm sure.

It's great you are having counselling. I am a psychologist and have therapy as part of my job so have been able to use that space to offload and explore my feelings.

I'm not sure if I am having a four month check up. Have an appointment with the oncologist on 11th August so that could be it haha and then appointment with my surgeon in November.

Will be ringing the best clinic tomorrow to see if they can look at my lump and get some reassurance.

Hope you have a fabulous holiday!

    Take care xx
