Postmenopausal bleeding and abdominal pain

Hi  there, my name is Denise. I have not had a period since 2018 and I am 49yrs old. My mum died from Cervical cancer when I was 20yrs old after a 2 year fight with the illness. Shortly after that I had 3 abnormal smears and needed to get laser treatment and have had no problems since then.
9 days ago I started bleeding and it went quite heavy with clots and it was dark red and then went the prune colour. I had abdominal pain on my right side for a couple of days then this subsided and the bleeding became very heavy. It felt like everything I moved it was outing out of me. I decided to have a soak in the bath for the second time that day and looked down to see myself sat in a pool of very red blood, it was about the size of a large dinner plate. I range 111 and they got me an appointment with an urgent care doctor who mentioned it could be cancer a few times. It said it could also be other things but he said it's better to think worst case scenario. My husband and I went home shell shocked and I was upset for a few days. Then because the bleeding got worse I went straight to the gynae ward at hospital, directions from 111. They did an internal, blood tests and prescribed me a medicine to stop the bleeding which I haven't taken yet as it hasn't
Been as bad today, but I feel like someone has kicked me really hard in my right side and I am have some shooting pain sensations going down my leg and around my right side to my back? I
I have received my appointment to see the consultant in 1 week, but I am so worried and trying to put on a brave face for my kids and family members, but I just want to lock myself away and be in my own world. I am finding it so hard to take my mind of it.

I guess I'm on this sight because I am looking for anyone else who has been through a similar experience to I?

Good luck to everyone xxx

  • Hello Denise

I'm sorry to hear that you've been experiencing this bleeding. It's natural that you're feeling anxious and worried about what may be causing your symptoms.

I'm glad to hear that you've already seen someone from the gynaecology team and that you're due to see them again in the clinic next week.

I understand you want to put on a brave face around your family. However, sometimes it can help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat with our team of nurses? I'm sure they will be happy to talk things through with you and offer any advice, information, and support they can ahead of your appointment next week. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

If you're unsure about the medication that you've been prescribed by the gynae ward then don't be afraid to give them a call or contact your GP for advice.

I hope that things settle for you and that the Consultant is able to give you some firmer answers and reassurance about things when you see them next week. Keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn

  • Hi Jen,

Thank you so much for responding to my post. I have had so many different thoughts this past week, a lot of what ifs, or what will happen next, then what, my career, my grown up boys, my husband, thinking how will everyone cope if I become sick now. I suppose this is normal when faced with uncertainty about a health issue.

The bleedinghas reduced somewhat this last day or so and I had really bad pain in my right side for 3 days, but this has got better too. I have an ultrasound on Mon 18th July and Gynae Consultant app on 20th July. The NHS have treated me like a private patient so far.

Thanks for giving me the no.for the nurses, that's very reassuring to know there's someone at the end of  phone to speak to.

I'll keep you posted, thanks again,

    Love Denise.
