Breast Lump - go private?

Hi,

I have suffered with multiple lumps over the years. Always in the right breast - variety of cysts and fibrodenomas. I have actually been the breast clinic 2 in the past 9 months. The first time i had a physical exam on both breasts, mammo and ultrasound. The second time just a physical exam and ultrasound- both times comfirmed cysts

About 5 weeks ago, a large lump have appeared in my left breast. Very noticeable as soon as it appeared. I was told at my last breast clinic appointment in April that although there are no lumps in my left breast, it is full of dense breast tissue. I decided to leave the lump to see how it got  on. Anyway, still there so went GP yesterday.

He has put the fear of god into me and said it feels/looks tethered and has referred me to the breast clinic. I said "surely it would have appeared on Novembers mammogram". He said "well yes but there is always exceptions"

So i have the worst night ever, anxiety through the roof. I am due on holiday in 2 weeks for my brothers wedding so if i have to wait the full 2 week turnaround that takes me right up to our holiday date.

My best friend works for a private healthcare hospital and has secured me an appointment today. Obviously at a cost. If the results aren't favourable, I couldn't afford to continue with private treatment, i would have to go back to nhs. How does that even work? Am i best just waiting for my NHS appointment?

  • Hello Story78

I just wanted to post to ask how you got on at your appointment yesterday? I hope that the specialist was able to give you some reassurance about this most recent lump that you've found.

Hopefully, you'll be able to go away and enjoy the family time together at your brother's wedding.

Do let us know how you got on if you're able to.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi!

Thanks for your reply! I actually rang the NHS hospital and asked to be put on the cancellation list. They rang back and offered me a cancellation for this morning which i snapped up. I cancelled my private appointment.

Unfortunately my lump needs further investigation. Although it presents initially like a cyst, it has certain characteristics that suggest otherwise. They have taken a number of biopsies and i should get results in a week

  • Hello Story78

I'm so glad that you were able to secure a cancellation appointment. At least these biopsies were able to be taken at the same time and you should have some answers next week.

I know that this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult. If you want to talk with our team of nurses at any point you're welcome to give them a call. I'm sure they will be happy to talk with you and offer any advice and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Story78 and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
