Could I have colorectal cancer at 21

Recently I have been experiencing some abdominal pain, not serious but annoying and often and also a feeling of pl being bloted. I also have a pressure in my anal/rectum area which feels like i need to pass gas of stool but I do not need to and have this feeling most of the time apart from just after waking up and if I have not eaten for a while. It tends to feel worse after eating but is not painful, just uncomfortable. I have also had bowel movements more frequently than before instead of once a day or every couple days it is now a couple times a day despite me not changing my diet or eating more. I know some of these are symptoms of colorectal cancer and am very anxious/stressed about it which probably isn't helping. I recently had blood tests and a fecal sample done. The blood test came back normal apart from a slightly high thyroid level which they said wasn't concerning. The fecal sample came back completely fine. I was wondering if anyone may have had similar symptoms to me

  • Hello, I had the same symptoms and I was also passing blood each time I was on the loo.

I have just been going through all these worries until yesterday I really thought I had colon cancer, my FIT test was greater than 400 when I went for my colonoscopy, my diagnosis was Ulcerated colitis. There are many reasons you are getting these symptoms. I found this group very helpful when I had questions or worries.

I wish you all the best with everything xx

  • While it's not impossible to get colorectal cancer at 21, it is very, very uncommon. And there are far more likely reasons for your symptoms. The thyroid level being high could explain a fair amount of it - diarrhea and more frequent bowel movements are one effect of that. Stress or anxiety could also explain most of your symptoms. As could IBS, possibly something like lactose intolerance, etc.

Have you seen any blood in your stools or had any weight loss? Was the fecal sample a FIT test? If it was and it came back negative, then colorectal cancer is, I believe, very unlikely indeed.

Also bowel movements more than once a day are still within normal limits. Yes, a change in bowel movements can be a sign of colorectal cancer, but there are far more likely explanations.

A year ago, I had rectal bleeding, some weight loss (about a stone in a year), occasional loose stools (maybe once a week) and trapped wind. The specialist said that as I was only 40, the odds of cancer were extremely low and I would be "the unluckiest person in the world" if it turned out to be that. You are little more than half my age and haven't mentioned bleeding or weight loss, just the symptoms that are consistent with far more common conditions, so I would say the odds in your case are even lower than in mine.

  • Hi thank you for your reply, I have not had any bleeding and as far as I know i havent had any significant weight loss although my weight fluctuates a lot and I do struggle to put on weight in general. As for the fecal sample I am not sure if it was an FIT test but I believe that they said they were checking for everything and anything that could be seen as abnormal so I'm guessing that was included

  • You would know if you had significant weight loss. Honestly, it doesn't sound like you have any reason to worry. Did your doctor suggest colorectal cancer as a possible explanation for your symptoms? If they were concerned about it, they probably would.
