Mole

Hiya! I posted my mole on an app that is meant to be good for saying if a mole is suspicious or not, and it's come back high risk! I am calling doctors asap tomorrow. But just wanted to speak to other people and hear their stories as now I'm freaking out!!

thank you!x

  • Hi there,

Was this Skinvision? It's good to get it checked but just wanted to briefly reassure you with my own experience on the app. So I did some research and while SkinVision is very good for catching possible skin cancer with a high detection rate, it also has a very high false positive rate - something like 20% of moles that are fine will be incorrectly flagged as high risk. That's 200 out of every 1000, so it's a lot. Many moles that look fine will incorrectly get flagged, but it's the price to pay for having a system that accurately detects possible skin cancer.

Skinvision also isn't looking at whether the mole has changed or not in a short space of time. This is the key piece of information to determine whether a mole could be cancerous.

So in short, definitely good to get it checked. I encourage anyone with many moles to get them looked over by a healthcare professional regardless, but at the same time, don't let Skinvision panic you into thinking it's definitely something, because chances are it's not (especially if you've not noticed any changes).

I've had two moles flagged by Skinvision as high risk. On both times, SkinVision quality control came back at a later date and said that their team of dermatologists have reviewed the pictures and determined that the high risk flag was incorrect. They may very well do the same for yours.

Still, get them looked at by a doctor and hopefully nothing to worry about!
