Ultrasound may not showing lump, told come back in 3 months?

Hi I'm just looking for any advice or similar experiences.

I found a hard breast lump (approx 1cm), underneath my breast around a month ago and was sent for an ultrasound 2 weeks later.

fast forward to my appointment where the doctor examined me and said he could feel the lump and assured me it's likely a benign lump that young women can get (I'm 25).

I have the ultrasound and the radiologist, after what seemed like a very short scan, says it's just normal breast tissue. I had just been told by the doctor previous that he could feel the lump so I questioned it and whether I had told him the correct place (this is because he only put the scanner on the area I thought it was).

after the appointment I was seen by the doctor again, I questioned the difference in their opinions and he said he wants to see me again in 3 months to check up on it.

im very confused. Is it normal breast tissue? And if so, why do they want to see me again in 3 months? or is it a lump which is missed on the ultrasound? Which waiting 3 months to 'check again' doesn't sit right with me.

my next appointment is in august and me and my partner both think the 'lump' feels bigger. I'm not sure what to do. I feel like the radiologist treated me like a hypochondriac but I'm so confused with the mixed messages I'm getting from him and the doctor.

anyone got any advice?
and is it normal for them to only scan the area where there's a 'lump' or is the whole breast usually scanned?

  • Hello Maya9222

I'm sorry to hear that you recently found a lump and needed an appointment at the breast clinic. From what you've explained in your post, it's understandable that you have some questions and concerns.

The large majority of people who attend breast clinics are not diagnosed with cancer but it's good to hear that the Consultant wants to follow things up with you again in 3 months. I know from other posts I've read here on the forum that this does sometimes happen and whilst the waiting can be difficult, try to remain positive.

It can sometimes help to talk things through with someone whilst waiting and I wonder if you'd find it beneficial to chat with our team of nurses? I'm sure they would be able to give some information and advice to help you over the next few months. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that at your next appointment the team is able to give you some reassurance but if you notice any changes between now and then, do let your GP or the breast clinic know.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

How are you now? What happened at the second appointement?

  • Hi Anna_ and welcome to the forum,

I can see from your post that you were hoping to hear back from Maya. Unfortunately they haven't returned to the forum since making this post in July so there is a possibility you may not get a reply.

I really hope that won't be the case but if Maya doesn't get back to you then you're very welcome to start your own discussion or reach out to others on more active threads via the 'search forum' option in the purple bar above.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
