Moviprep bowel prep help, colonoscopy in the morning

Hello, I am so behind on the schedule for taking each glass of the movi prep because I am up and down to the loo so much, every few mins, I still have not finished my first liter let alone the 2nd liter, I am really struggling with it. I was supposed to start between 5-6, I finished my 1st glass by 6.45 and still have approx a quarter of the 1st liter to drink. I have to be in the hospital by 8.30 am. Is it a problem if i am behind on the times on the instructions?

Any help would be great

Thank you

  • Keep going best you can and definitely turn up for appointment. I accompanied someone close a lot on the colonoscopies. Prep wasn't always perfect but doctors were still able to do significant element of check and get some biopsies. Sometimes prep went "perfectly" and told bowel not as clean as they wanted (so postponed for further colonoscopy with more senior doctor as it was a huge 10cm polyp then postponed yet again as beyond competence for even more senior doctor) plus needed follow-up colonoscopies. Sometimes not so perfect prep and bowel was better. So don't stress as it will make getting prep down even harder. Try and speed up if you can. But what will be will be, I figure. Good luck for tomorrow.

  • Thank you so much for your kind words.

I was concerned I would still be needing the loo when i arrive at the hospital x

  • Well the journey there is the trickiest bit, I guess. And really everyone is different.

Maybe take spare underwear/clothes and towels just in case (but I think an accident is unlikely). Hospital will be so used to that kind of thing. Absolutely no embarrassment if anything happens. Also, if you feel need to go, just try and register soon as possible and let reception know of the issue. There are often multiple people booked in at same time and likely someone could go in before you. Just get there at the right time with whatever padding you feel you need and a change of clothes. That is however worst and I think unlikely scenario as things will probably be clear (given how quickly it is impacting on you personally) a lot quicker! x

  • Thank you so much I feel much better after your chat x

  • That;s good. The prep isn't pleasant so you definitely have my sympathy.

The person I went with got good news in the end as the polyp was caught just in time – high grade dysplasia but hadn't reached bowel wall. A close shave, but caught in time despite all the postponements and need for "top" guy to do the procedure in the end! Really hope all goes well for you.x

  • We've all been there - just try to force it down as best as you can. Have you tried alternating with a sip of water?
The idea is to purge your bowels, it sounds like that's definitely working! My guess is they have a standard dose which takes no account of your height and weight - so a 6ft 6inch 20 stone rugby player would get the same dose as my 5 foot nothing and 8 stone Mam!

Getting to the hospital isn't dignified - I've sometimes had to pad my undies with kitchen towel to stop the leakage going through my jeans. Don't wear white linen whatever you do.

The staff will have seen it all before and will be professional in their outlook.

    Good luck!

    Dave

  • I had to have one of those earlier this year and the drink was awful,  I added juice, drank thru a straw and still couldn't manage to drink it all , I worried because I didn't poop much either and was still pooping in the morning , despite not being able to drink it all, they managed to see inside pretty well, they did have to use water to wash some particals away but that was all , I also feared I'd have an accident but didn't.

    Good luck

  • I just wanted to check back in to once again say thank you to all who replied to my post and your kind encouraging words.

I only got 1-hour of sleep that night and I tried my hardest to finish the prep but I was feeling so poorly and weak after not eating much in the week before, when going onto the prep food list, i stuck to clear liquid strained soup powders. I became friends with my bathroom that evening after visiting it over 30 times. Morning came and I was still gurgling away in my belly, I made the journey to the hospital ok :)

The staff was fantastic and kind but it felt pretty lonely as I couldn't have anyone come with me, covid has heightened in my area again and the hospitals are becoming more strict again.

I had sedation but to be honest, I did not feel any different, The colonoscopy all went ok until I had to turn onto my tummy, he had trouble getting to "the end" of my colon and I was very uncomfortable but the staff was very supportive and it did not last long. I was in pain after, in the recovery room ad that lasted the best part of Sunday.

Today I feel well and I have been diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis, I have also had 4 biopsies taken and have to wait on the results for those.

I wish all the best to everyone who has been kind enough to reply to my posts and any others who are on their health journey xx

  • That's so good of you giving an update. Thank you as it really helps others who have to go through this. I forgot how much covid has affected things and all the visitor restrictions as our visits were pre-pandemic. Ulcerative colitis is something that needs to be diagnosed when it's there so hopefully you will get support to manage this and I hope the biopsies don't flag up anything else.

Do feel free to vent on here if you need to while waiting on biopsy results etc.

It sounds like you did really well with that prep getting through it and am really pleased your journey to the hospital was ok.  Good luck with everything! And again, thanks so much for posting the update. xx

  • Thank you !

I left nearly half a liter of the prep, but on my report the hospital gave me the doctor said "The bowel preparation with moviprep was excellent". I drank 1000ml of water in between sips of the move prep and stuck strictly to the food list I was given.

I am unsure why the biopsies were taken, I have 30cm of inflammation from the anus to the sigmoid, and small ulcers were found, I had a few photos taken too.

My GP is calling me tomorrow so hopefully, I can get more info then.

I will most defiantly call back in to this site, it was a god send for me with the worries I had while waiting xx
