Anxious wait

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice or support. I've recently had bleeding during & after intercourse along with a heavy dull feeling in my lower abdomen and pain in my lower back, with longer than usual periods. After a few weeks I bit the bullet and went to see my gp (anxious due to birth trauma). Anyway she had a look and had said she can see where the bleeding is coming from, my cervix is inflamed and I have a large vascular area that she could see. She took some swabs for stds and infection and requested an urgent referral for gynaecology. I'm still waiting for my appointment however my swabs have come back clear so I know it isn't an infection of any kind. Now I can't switch off due to worrying that it is cervical cancer as I know the symptoms I'm having could very well be. The gp didn't give me any other ideas as to what it could be and the look on her face didn't help me at all. I'm now just going over and over what she said and how she looked.

Has anybody gone through a similar experience and what was the outcome? I've got 2 lovely young children and my husband is fantastic trying to support me at the moment, even though I feel silly as I haven't even had a diagnosis yet.

Thanks in advance for any replies

  • Hello beemama and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

You did the right thing to go and see your GP and it looks like they are being thorough and doing all the necessary tests. It's good news that your swabs have come back clear. I know it's really hard but try not to anticipate what it might be as there are so many things it could be other than cervical cancer. It is probably too early for your GP to be able to tell you what it might be as they may need to have all test results in hand as well as wait until you have seen the gynaecologist so try not to interpret the look on her face as it is likely it doesn't actually mean anything at this stage.

I hope that you will hear from others on the forum who have been through a similar experience and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. It's great that your husband is very supportive with you at the moment - you do need his support at the moment as waiting for a diagnosis is often described here as the hardest thing.

The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
