Breast Cancer Query

Hello

I originally posted this is 'Ask the Nurses' but wondered if someone here might be able to help.

Last Wednesday night I noticed that my right breast was a strange shape.

The outer lower part looked flat rather than rounded and when viewed from the side there was a dent about the size of a 20p which was a slightly darker colour.

I saw my GP on Monday and she said she could see the dent and after examination thought she could feel a lump under the dent but my underarm seemed normal.

I have been very fortunate and have an appointment at the breast clinic tomorrow due to a cancellation.

However, I am now experiencing pains which run up the right side of my neck and a burning sensation around my right collar bone.

Both symptoms come and go and I am not sure if am imagining them (possibly because I have read too much on line).

Has anyone experienced these symptoms and it turned out to be a simple cyst or an infection?

  • Hello Mrs_Mac

I can see from another post that since you posted this message you've been to the breast clinic and have been given some preliminary biopsy results. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious and worried about what lies ahead and undoubtedly you'll have lots of questions.

Has the team given you another appointment date? Hopefully, the next time you see them they will have a much clearer picture of what's going on for you and be able to give you some reassurance. However, we do know that this period of uncertainty can be very difficult and many people turn to the internet in search of answers. What then usually happens is that people are left feeling even more worried and anxious and still with no firm answers. Please do try and avoid searching for answers online. Much of what you'll read is inaccurate or aimed at the spectacular. I'd suggest giving our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they will be happy to talk things through with you and offer any advice, information, and support that they can ahead of your next appointment. If you would like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Mrs_Mac and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn

I was told that someone would phone me today to arrange the CT and MRI scans.

The consultant I saw last night is off on holidays for the next two weeks, but he said he would get his nurse to arrange the scans in the interim.

I know I am very lucky to be seen so quickly, but when you are worried two weeks seems like a long time.

I just thought I would reach out to someone with IBC, to see how they got on.

Apologies if I shouldn't be discussing my symptoms on line.

  • Hello Mrs_Mac

Please don't apologise, Cancer Chat is here for you to chat with others who are /have been through similar situations and I know that many of our members will understand how difficult this period of waiting for results can be. Many of them will also agree that if you're diagnosed with cancer, once you have those answers and know what the next steps are in a treatment plan then it does become a little easier.

Hang in there Mrs_Mac. You're doing really well. The CT and MRI are normal parts of the diagnostic process and it means that by the time you next see your Consultant he should have all the information needed.

I wanted to give you the nurse's contact details because I know that many people have found it really helpful to chat to someone with someone who can help answer some of their questions but is also a safe listening ear to vocalise some of the fears and concerns that you may have.

Keep yourself busy over the next 2 weeks. It sounds like a cliche but it does help if you can keep yourself occupied. Try and avoid searching online for answers. You won't necessarily find answers specific to your situation but you will most likely end up feeling more worried and anxious.

We're here to support you so keep in touch.

    Sending best wishes,
