Transvaginal Ultrasound - Worried about Ovarian Cancer

Hi everyone,

Im 25 and I've been experiencing abdominal pain for about 5 weeks now. After about 2 weeks my symptoms worsened and I was experiencing back ache / needing a wee constantly / bloating. I went to the doctors and had a number of swabs / an internal examination. She ruled out pregnancy and urine infections. She referred me to have an ultrasound which took place today! I've had one before (about 1 year ago) and they discussed the results with me as the ultrasound was happening and told me that everything looked normal.

Todays experience was a lot different and it's got me worried  It was at a physio clinic (and not a doctors surgery like last time) but the woman said she wouldn't discuss my results with me and that I needed to call my doctor to get the results next week. She also said two comments when doing the internal part of the ultrasound to the other lady in the room who typed it up (one was a number like 'right 82' and then she said something like 'right endo  325'). She wouldn't even give me an indication on the outcome of the results or anything! Is this normal? Even if there's nothing wrong? I've already had 5 weeks of sleepless nights and another week waiting for results it's not what I had on the cards. I expected them to at least give me some indication today.

  • I've had various experiences to be honest. I've had an ultrasound where they wouldn't tell me anything at all and said I would have to speak to the consultant who referred me (it was an ovarian cyst).

The last scan I had she told me it was ovarian cyst but didn't give any further details than that.

So, both times was just a cyst and nothing more serious and one time they told me and one time they wouldn't. So I don't think you can draw too many conclusions.

I hope your results are nothing too serious and you're not waiting too long.

  • I had a trans vaginal ultrasound to confirm that my complex ovarian cysts had not changed they confirmed that there was no change at the end of the scan. The oncology surgeon removed them two months later. The multiple biopsies taken during the operation were fortunately benign

l hope you have a similar outcome

  • Hi,

I've also been for a transvaginal scan today for the same reason as you and I wasn't told anything either. Before the scan started they advised me that they couldn't tell me anything and the results would go back to my GP.

The waiting is horrendous isn't! I've got issues with high platelets too so I've now been put on a two week wait referral to the hospital so again more waiting for probably more tests.

I hope you're ok and try not to worry too much. I took the positive from them saying at the start they couldn't tell me anything before they had even seen anything.

Fingers crossed we'll get some results soon! Xxx

  • Hi Lou,

You're right - it's the wait that's so frustrating :-( I'm glad that you had a similar experience (in that they told you they couldn't discuss anything either). I'm just dissapintd because I was expecting some clarity to at least put me on the right track of what the problem might be.

Oh well, hopefully we get some answers soon.

Did they tell you to call your doctor next week for the results? I'm going to try ring them on Monday.

Good luck at the hospital too. Hope everything goes Ok!
