CA-125 levels raised after symptoms of Perimenopause

Hi,

could I ask if anyone has had perimenopause symptoms mistaken for ovarian cancer? I went to the doctors who done lots of bloods and my CA125 level can back as raised so have been referred to a gynaecologist I have my scans next Tuesday and would like to know if this is common that perimenopause symptoms can be similar to overian cancer symptoms? My symptoms are bloating, especIlly after eating but any amount of food, on and off fatigue, dizziness, periods being both early and late, and sometimes painful intercourse!

thank you all in advance x

  • Hi

I am perimenopause age and I know there can be many strange symptoms you can attribute to that and other things. I have had heartburn, pelvic pain, nausea, lower back & hip pain, erratic periods and bowels for months. I was scared of ovarian cancer too. eventually got a transvaginal ultrasound where they found an ovarian cyst. I have then had to wait another 6 weeks to have another ultrasound next week where they will assess the cyst again and see if it should be removed. I don't know if all my symptoms are related to the cyst or age whatever but it's awful waiting and wondering and being uncomfortable.

Hope you get some answers soon

    Lou

  • Hi Lou,

    Thank you for replying.

I have had a lot of the same symptoms as you, it is horrible all the waiting, that is probably the worst thing, can I ask if you have had the CA-125 bloody test and if so, was it raised?
    Thanks again xx

  • I had the CA 125 test a couple of months ago which came back in the normal range but my doctor says that's not conclusive and it can be normal with cancer and raised for many other reasons that are not cancer like cysts, hormones etc.

I hope your scans are OK next Tuesday, mine Is next Thursday but last time they didn't tell me anything straight away, I had to wait for my doctor to call with results a few days later.

  • Thank you Lou.

My doctor has told me the same in regards the possibility of it being other things, just can't help thinking the worse as I have been here before, I had Melanoma in 2012, trying my best to think positive though.

My scans are in the morning on Tuesday and I am seeing a gynaecologist in the afternoon, so hoping I will get the results the same day.

Will be keeping everything crossed for you for Thursday xx

  • Hi

just thought I would let you know how today went, scans was clear which was a huge relief but I felt totally patronised and finished by the male gynaecologist consultant, He said it some countries CA125 blood tests are banned, he blames America as they discovered it and all of my symptoms Was not related to perimenopause, I asked why my doctor done the tests and he said that doctors get spooked! And that there's no way I'd be in perimanopause! He could not wait to get me in and out, it was only because I told him I had a family history of both bowel and breast cancer and I myself had melanoma that he took me seriously, but if I hadn't told him he would not have asked a single thing about my history.

The only thing he did suggest without prompting was for the bloods to be repeated.

Hope you get on ok Thursday please let me know x

  • Thanks for getting back and letting me know how you got on.  That's such a relief for you and I'm glad all clear but obviously not a great experience all the same. The ca125 test does seem to cause a lot if worry and can be raised for many reasons.

I'm not expecting to get any news at my scan tomorrow as my doctor will prob contact me once results are in but I hope the cyst is getting smaller, just want to stop worrying really.

  • Hi.

I'm waiting for a ct scan after a raised ca125 bloods and pain.

    Very scared to be honest.

    It's helpful reading your responses.
