Spitting blood for 8 weeks. Now a 20 week wait to see an ENT

I've read so many recent posts on here from others younger than me who have significantly worse symptoms than I do and have seen ENT specialists within days and it's completely breaking me.

I've seen 6 GPs recently about spitting up blood and pain in my throat (not sore throat like actual pain, more like mass) they practically ignore what I tell them, or they do not even try to diagnose my problems. After literally telling the last GP I had a lump on my tonsil she just had a quick look and reported she couldn't see anything, if she used a tongue decompress she would have seen it, I figured she would try a bit harder since I reported seeing it myself but no one cares because I'm "a young man". I'm 32, smoked for over a decade and drank heavily over the pandemic with depression.

I've been spitting blood for 8 weeks. Every week more blood. With extreme fatigue, headache, ear ache, occasionally swollen tonsils.... Early I got an urgent referral for an X-ray, that came back fine according to a specialist but maybe with a small apical thickening according to another, either way the lungs are clear and I have no cough so it doesn't worry me. But spitting blood every day really does. This week it's been every 2 hours, bright red. I go back to the GP, report things are worse, they do nothing, becuse im "a young man", because "I seem healthy". I've seen 6 GPs, not one has even ordered a blood test.

It just kills me to read that others have seen ENTs quickly, I've been told that if I was 40 I would have seen an ENT in 2 weeks... the wait til is 20 weeks. I've already been spitting blood for 8. By the time I see a specialist it will be well over 6 months from first reporting symptoms.

I don't know what to do anymore, I honestly just want to give up on life, I feel so chronically failed by every aspect of the NHS, noone cares while I'm in significant distress with worrying symptoms and frequent pain.

What should I do? I feel like my only shot is to raise a complaint to the NHS to see if something can be done but I expect they'll tell me the same thing everyone else has. I can barely take waiting a few more days let alone 20 weeks.

  • Hello Noobert

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some ongoing health concerns at the moment. It sounds like it's been a real worry for you and I can sense the frustration and anxiety in your post.

It's good to hear that the initial x-ray you had didn't give any immediate cause for concern but as your symptoms haven't resolved it's understandable that you're still feeling worried about what may be causing them.

When we raise a concern and don't feel heard it can be very disheartening. When you're struggling to feel heard and also managing feelings of anxiety and depression it can be difficult to then advocate for yourself. One of the things you could do is to give the hospital a call and ask if they hold a cancellation list. If they do, it may mean that you're able to get an appointment sooner if one becomes available.

If your symptoms do change at all then let your GP surgery know so that they can arrange to see you again, update your ENT referral or make any other appropriate appointments. If you feel that things are getting worse and you're unable to speak with a GP then you could call NHS 111

There is information available on the NHS website about making a complaint if that's a route you feel you want to take at any point.

In the meantime, I'd encourage you to have a look at this information that may help you cope with the wait. Many of our members here know how difficult this period of waiting can be. Keeping busy and avoiding searching for information online can also help.

If you want to talk to our team of nurses you're welcome to call them. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any information, advice, and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks for the reply, I mean for sure I'm worried but part of it is just feeling like nobody cares and that other people are able to get support from the nhs while I can't, your message really did help. I will get back on at my GP one more time next week if things continue to get worse and if not ill just change and put in a complaint. Really appreciate you sending over the number too, I find it hard to speak to people about stuff sometimes but is useful to know that its there if i ever need it, thanks again.
