Waiting for my biopsy results from a colonoscopy

Hi,

My name is Lucy I'm 23 years old and I had my first colonoscopy yesterday to look for signs of colon cancer. They took 4 biopsies and said it takes 2-3 weeks for the results, I'm just looking for some help on why would they take biopsies? As I was drowsy when they where talking to me yesterday so I can't really remember much. I'm really worried and anxious about it

  • Hi Lucy,

I hope you're doing OK. Waiting for biopsy results can sometimes put people in an anxiety spiral but don't overthink it and remember to take deep breaths. They will have taken biopsies of any suspicious areas where they feel further evaluation is needed. It doesn't necessarily mean anything right now - just that they need to take a closer look under the microscope to work out what's going on. Biopsies can be used to diagnose a number of conditions, many of them relatively harmless and treatable, so it's impossible to assume anything at this stage.

2-3 weeks will be over soon and you'll hopefully have some reassuring results by then, but I understand it can feel like a lifetime when you're waiting. Look after yourself in the meantime and make sure to talk to people if you're feeling like the anxiety is getting a bit much.

    Best of luck.
