Really struggling. CIN3 at 25.

Hi all

i have posted on here before but really looking for some support or advice from anyone who can relate.

long story short I had my first smear in March which came back HPV low grade changes. Colposcopy was done they said looked very mild so thought nothing of it. Was told not to worry. Came back CIN3. Was told to wait 6 months for repeat colposcopy to see if it regresses. Got 2nd opinion privately he agreed with the approach given my age and risk of pregnancy complications. Was told not to worry.

Monday I got a call from NHS colposcopy clinic bookings team saying to come in for treatment - no other info as to why. I said I was advised to wait. I have done a lot of research and the treatment doesn't sound pleasant, and given the side effects relating to pregnancy, fertility, loss of sexual sensation etc (I've seen a few stories about people even having permanent having mood & creativity changes if the nerves are severed) I was hoping to avoid it if I can and attempt to live healthy in the hope of regression in 6 months. I am at a complete loss feel totally ill informed. Essentially impossible to speak to a doctor or nurse at colposcopy clinic. Waiting to try and get another appt with private doctor.

to make matters worse I've got 2 groin lumps which I noticed around 2 years ago which never went. Saw GP was told probably from shaving (even though they're really deep and movable like glands) so now convinced myself it's not CIN3 it's cervical cancer that's spread to my lymph nodes. I haven't even been sexually active for 10 years so not sure how it's got so severe so soon. And I did have the HPV vaccine age 13. Basically losing my mind any advice would be really appreciated. This is my 2nd cancer health scare in less than a year the other was a bad bowel polyp which again I'm super young to have so I'm starting to fear there's something wrong with my body and things like this will just keep on happening.

  • Hello S725,

Try not to worry too much about the fact that it came back CIN3 as these abnormal cell changes are treatable and I hope that you will hear from other forum members who have been in a similar place before and that they will share their story with you. You can find out more information on our website on treatment for abnormal cervical cells which I hope will reassure you.

You will also find detailed information on this page on what to expect from the colposcopy. Try not to look too much information online as it may be misleading and make you worry unnecessarily. Instead, if you feel you are not properly informed, it is a good idea to talk to your medical team about your worries and ask whether they could explain things to you clearly and answer any questions you may have. I hope you manage to get through to someone and get the information you need. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 and their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call if there is anything you would like to talk through with them.

It's good you saw the GP about these lumps and it sounds like it was nothing to worry about so try if you can not to anticipate the worst as CIN3 doesn't mean at all you have cervical cancer and the treatment is very effective. I am sure this will be dealt with once and for all and I am keeping everything crossed for you that you no longer need to worry about all this very soon and that the treatment works very well for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you. It's the fact it was lockdown and felt I wasn't seen properly by GP. Well before my smear. And got told so much over a letter and told 'contact us if you have any questions' which I did - couldn't speak to the NHS consultant was told a nurse would call me, they didn't. I'm very lucky I have the option of going private. A lot of people don't and would feel very lost and alone.
