Mole Removal

Good evening,

I had a mole removed on Saturday as the Dr said she agreed ' it doesn't look right'. I was told the results would be quick. I went to my GP with the molr last year but only saw a nurse due to covid. After a revisit 8 months later I was referred to dermatology. The wait for the results is a struggle.

Are results normally sent via post?

  • Hi Sarah,

Thanks for posting. Sadly the stress of waiting doesn't really get easier but hopefully you get your results soon so it won't be too long of a wait. The nurses should have hopefully given you an indication for how long the results should take - it seems to vary from where you are in the country and the backlog the labs are facing.

Results can be sent by post, but not always. Sometimes if the results are benign, the doctor may discharge you by letter. However, it doesn't always happen. Sometimes a mole can be benign but dysplastic (this is still harmless and the majority of dodgy looking moles fall into this category), but because having a dysplastic mole means you're likely to have others that don't look quite right, the dermatologist may still wish to see you in person to give your other moles a once over before discharging you. This means you may be given the results in person, even if the results are good news.

The wait is stressful, but remember to take deep breaths. The majority of moles that are biopsied come back as benign (over 90%), and even in the worst case, this is highly treatable in the early stages which a large number of cases are.

I know the doctor said it doesn't look right, but there's a lot of moles that don't look right clinically or dermatoscopically that turn out to be OK. There's a huge grey area in suspicious mole appearance so the threshold for biopsy is quite low - hence most doctors refer these for biopsy to be on the safe side. Try to think of this step as precautionary until you are told otherwise.

Best of luck with your results and hopefully you aren't waiting too long.
