Tethered breast dimple. Clear scans. 3 month review,

Hi guys, I hope someone can offer some knowledge or advice.

I have a 3cm x 3cm breast dimple on the 5 o clock position on the curve of my left boob.
I had a clear mammo and ultrasound a month before noticing this dimple, so I've been advised by the breast doctor that it isn't necessary to repeat this, and he'll check it again in a few months.

My worry is, this dimple is made up of sharp, tethered lines, which form a Y shape. I've never seen anything like it online! Most people just seem to have very faint dimples, but mine is really obvious, and the deep, tethered lines look quite shocking!
It is visible with my arms by my side, and especially visible when I tense my chest muscles, but disappears when I raise my arm or lie down.

So I'm just wondering, should I push harder to get this checked out again, maybe ask my GP for a new referral? or am I ok to wait til September when I have an appointment at the breast clinic?
And does anyone know if the appearance/characteristics of a dimple suggest a need for more urgency?

For info.... I have no lump, no family history, no recent weight loss, I'm 38 and my youngest child is 7.

  • Hello _driftwoodhearts_

I'm sorry to hear that you're still feeling anxious about the breast changes that you've recently noticed. It's good to know that your recent mammogram and ultrasound didn't pick up any cause for concern and that the specialist has already planned to review this issue in a few months.

You mention in your post that you've been looking at information online about breast dimpling. We know that many people turn to the internet looking for information. Unfortunately what happens most often is that they don't find answers and they're left feeling even more anxious about the problem than they were initially. Please try to avoid searching online for answers. It rarely helps. You might find it helpful to have a look at this information from the NHS about managing health anxiety whilst you're waiting for your follow-up appointment.

If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses for some advice and support they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope you have some reassurance soon.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you Jenn, that is such a kind response.

Oddly, I've noticed another tethered dimple in a similar place on the opposite breast. It's a different shape tethering (horizontal rather than vertical) but creates an almost identical indentation in exactly the same area as my other boob!
I am hoping this is a reassuring thing, especially combined with my clear scans, but I can't escape fact that the tethering and size of indents on both boobs is still quite worrying!

  • Hi! I have the same right now. What did your diagnosis end up being?
