Trying not worry about breast biopsy results

Hi ,

I just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience, about 4 months ago I started with a constant pain/ache in my right breast and in my right arm pit. I am 41 and there is a strong history of breast cancer in my family 4 aunties and my grandmother my mums mother who I never met as she sadly lost her life to it. I am very breast aware it is something that I have been brought up around, I have had lumps in the past got them checked and one I had a needle biopsy done about 8 years ago and everything was fine. When this pain started I checked my breast and could feel no lump in my breast but the skin in my armpit felt a lot thicker then the skin on my other. However, even though it was a constant pain I was not overly worried I thought I would wait to see if the pain went , and checked the symptoms of breast cancer and there was not much mention of pain. Skip to 2 months later this pain was not going away it was not linked to my cycle as it was a constant ache. I got a telephone appointment with my GP and after that they wanted to see me for a face to face appointment for an examination. The GP examined me and couldn't feel a lump same as me but did notice the skin on my right armpit seemed thicker than the left, she recommended a referral to the breast clinic because of my family history but did not think this was anything to worry about and gave me pain relief. However, my referral was messed up and sent to the wrong place and I waited 5 weeks to be seen in the breast clinic. I had my appointment on the 25th of May the consultant examined me and the same couldn't feel a lump was not overly concerned but recommended I have a mammogram because of my age. I had a mammogram and a 23 mm mass was seen on my right breast. Unfortunately my appointment was during the IT issues that had effected most hospitals in the northwest for about 3 weeks. The consultant said when I was called back into the room that he was not overly concerned as the mass looked benign and he was discharging me for now but he did want to compare the mass to previous scans I had had about 8 years ago as he thought it could be the same mass, even though that mass I could feel myself this one I could not. He said he was unable to compare results as he could not get on the system and he rushed me away and said if they needed to they would be back in touch. A couple of weeks later I had GP telephone appointment as the pain was just not getting any better and was now radiating up into my shoulder. He said he couldn't do anything because he had  it heard anything back from the breast clinic and until he did he couldn't refer me for any more tests to other departments he suggested I chase it up with the clinic. I did so on the 10th of June and spoke with the consultants secretary she was lovely she looked on the system and said the images from my appointment on the 25th of May had only just been compared to those that where already on the system the day before on the 9th and they was not the same and this mass was not in the same place so they where calling me back on the 14th for a scan in the breast clinic. I went for my appointment they did some more concentrated mammograms and then a scan the sonographer wasn't scanning long before she stopped and said she could not get a clear enough picture and not to worry but they were going to send me to another breast clinic at another hospital for a upright Stereo Mammogram and Core BX Rt biopsy and got me an appointment for the 16th 2 days later, sorry for this massive long story ! So at my appointment I had 6 biopsies on one side of the mass and a marker put in and was then given another mammogram to make sure they were happy with where the biopsies had been taken they was not , so had to go back in and they went in again from the other side of breast at a different angle and took another 5 biopsies and placed another marker, throughout they where telling me not worry , they aren't worried they just wanted to be sure ,  am I right in thinking they wouldn't tell me if it was anything to worry about anyway  ? Until they was sure ? They said my results should take about 7/10 days and they will be spoke about at a multidisciplinary panel and I may be informed my letter or have another appointment in clinc, I am trying to not worry I really am I just wanted to know if anyone had a similar experience and also what was there outcome? Was similar things said to them at there appointments/ biopsies you know try not to worry ?

thankyou for any help/ comments

  • Hi

I just wanted to jump in and say hi.

It sounds like you've had quite a tough time being sent forward and backwards and having so many biopsies and scans.

I can't offer much help other than to say that whilst they won't know if it's cancer until the results come back, I think they often have an idea having seen so many tumours before. My consultant told me that he was highly suspicious mine was cancer from how it looked on the scans and I know other people who have been told they have suspected cancer.

I have everything crossed for you that you will get some good news soon.

  • Hi ,

thankyou for replying that's what I was worried about whether they would actually say anything if they suspected anything, hope you are ok thankyou for replying to me. I am trying to stay really positive and take my mind off things fingers crossed.

    thankyou
