So scared about bowel cancer.

Hi all, I've just turned 30 and a mommy to two little girls. For the past few months I've had Blood in my stools and when I wipe and have recently started having some abdominal cramps and going to the toilet more often than normal. Have recently done a stool sample which came back as showing inflammation. Have been advised to re test in a few weeks and also been refered to GI. Im just so scared it's bowel cancer, all I do is sit at home crying and worrying that im gonna have to leave my babies has anyone had any similar symptoms and what was the diagnosis?

  • I had some similar symptoms, rectal bleeding, though not in the stool and some loose stools and weight loss and trapped wind. The specialist said that if my mother came in with the same symptoms, he'd be considering bowel cancer as a possible option but at my age - I was 40 at the time - it was the least likely option and I'd be "the unluckiest person in the world" if it turned out to be that and that the most likely cause was hemorrhoids with a slight possibility of IBD (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's).

It turned out to be exactly what we all expected - hemorrhoids, probably combined with the stress of the whole situation and a few coincidences. Stress can cause bowel symptoms like stomach aches and going to the toilet more often, so the thing with bowel symptoms is that worrying about them can exacerbate them, thereby increasing the worry and therefore the symptoms in a vicious circle.

It's normal to be worried; I was freaking, even though I knew bowel cancer was unlikely, but the odds are that whatever is wrong is far less serious.

  • Hello,

I am also 30 years old and have a daughter at 3 years old. In April i started to notice a change in bowel habits i.e quite explosive diahorrea poos, excessive gas, bloating, abdominal dull aches then the blood and mucus started about a week later. Went to docs Fit test came back positive as you can imagine i was freaking out. I was back and forward to the docs first week in May as i just couldnt get off the toilet and was so worried about the blood in the diahorrea/wiping (although i wasnt in any pain)

I was sent to the hosp where i had a flexi sig that showed signs of inflammation and some small patchy ulceration i was discharged with no meds and the blood continued. I was referred for an urgent colonoscopy where they managed right round the colon finding more inflammation at other side too. No tumours or anything found so it was a diagnosis of IBD for me. Crohns or colitis they still dont know ive to go for an MRI in my small bowel. I have been on steriods for the last 3 weeks and im feeling so much better apart from some weight gain. Still got blood in poo but not as much. Hopefully will go away completely on my IBD meds

I was beside myself the whole way through this literally googling anything and everything every min of the day and it always went back to cancer. Please try not to do that it didnt help me in any way at all. Gave myself unneeded stress

If you want to chat and ask any questions about symptoms etc id be happy to chat on another platform. I would of been glad of that a couple of months back when i was going through what sounds like the same thing as you

  • Hi I am 31 and I have been having explosive diarrhoea for the last 5 days, or very watery which is now resulting in bloody mucus, I am absolutely beside myself with worry that it is bowel cancer. I had a sigmoidoscopy 18 months ago which was clear other than a leftover skin tag from a hemorroid. All my issues back then went after that. This week has been hell! Every time I eat I toilet. I'm so hungry! I'm so sad! I'm so scared. Doctor told me on the phone it's a stomach bug and has given me antibiotics which I can't take :( she wants a stool sample sent to the lab but how am I supposed To do that when it's mainly water, I mean I am getting very thin formed stool (TMI) today but every time I eat it's so depressing! I'm so worried it's bowel cancer. Hope u are ok x
