How bad is abdominal pain if you have bowel cancer

Hi All,

So a few weeks ago I went to the GP after complaining about my bowel habits and a dull pain in right side of my lower abdomen (near appendix) and lower back. He first took some bloods, asked me to keep a food and stool diary, then two weeks later he took a FIT test. The bloods and the FIT test came back as normal and my bowel habits don't change that much (1 or 2 poos a day nearly all the time, though on one occasion I have been constipated and two occasions I had narrow poo which whent away after one day). WHilst lower back pain is worse when sitting in car or in office so is likely to be musculoskeletal.

However I still have dull ache as well which is to be checked by an ultrasound. Most of the time I don't feel it unless sitting down. However I was just wondering if this is a likely sign of bowel cancer or if abdominal pain with bowel cancer is more severe?

  • Hi Dave,

It's impossible to say really as, like all cancers, the symptoms can vary by quite large margins. Some people with bowel cancer will have no pain at all, some will have it mild, and others will have it quite bad to the point that they're unable to eat food. From what I understand, the pain caused by bowel cancer will typically be a persistent abdominal pain, bloating or discomfort, and is usually caused by eating.

Your bowel habits don't sound too concerning and it's good news the FIT and blood tests came back OK. The good news really is that lower back pain is much more likely to be the result of soft tissue and muscle injury, strain, etc. Lower back pain can be the result of bad posture as well. I noticed you said you work in an office - have you considered this as a possibility?

The doctor is doing the right thing by referring you to an ultrasound - sounds like a precautionary measure which should hopefully not come back with anything. I hope everything goes OK for you and do let us know how you get on.
