Excision biopsy

Hi everyone, I've had an ultrasound, bloods and went to a haematology appointment so far. The haematologist wants me to come back next week for an excision biopsy on my larger lump. Has anyone had one before and can explain what it will feel like during and if there will likely be scaring? xx

  • Hello Sunflower93

There's some information on the NHS website about biopsies that may help offer you some reassurance ahead of your appointment.

You will be given a local anaesthetic which might sting but other than that you shouldn't feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. With regards to scarring, that's a question best asked to the Consultant on the day. They will be able to offer you some advice about skincare to minimise any scarring if they think it's likely.

I do hope that you have some information and reassurance from the Consultant soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there, I recently had an excision biopsy for a mole on my back. The experience was fine really - wouldn't like to call such a thing pleasant, but it's certainly nothing to worry about. The nurses were really friendly / chatty. I had to lie down, they injected an anesthetic and I could feel nothing in that area after that - no pain, just completely numb. They chatted away about concerts they'd been to which was really nice as it distracted me from the procedure!

They'll pop a dressing on afterwards that you need to keep dry for 48 hours. After that, you may have stitches that dissolve on their own, or you may need to go back in to have the stitches removed by a nurse.

The worst part about the whole experience has been the itching, though I'm told that's a good thing.

Unfortunately, there will likely be some small scarring depending on the size of the area they plan to remove. I'm told mine will be fairly discreet, something like a white line, though I'm lucky with it being on my back so most people won't see it.

Hope all goes well for you at the appointment and best of luck with the results.
