Very worried - referred for ultrasound scan for lump on neck

I found a lump on the right side of the bottom of my neck a month ago. I went to the Doctors yesterday and he had a feel of it and said it could be a swollen lymph gland or a sebaceous cyst. I managed to get blood tests done the same day and called up 2 days later and was told my blood tests were fine. The Doctor has refered me for an ultrasound scan on the lump but i am very worried about it. The lump is visiable, i dont have any other symptoms but the is causing me a lot of stress, im 46 with a 10 year son and i am scared stiff, can anyone give me any honest advice?

  • Hello April76 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

You did really well to go the doctor's immediately after finding this lump on the right side of the bottom of your neck. It looks like they were quick to act and it's great that you managed to get blood tests the very same day and it's reassuring that they were fine.

Try not to worry too much about the ultrasound scan as there are so many things this lump could be other than cancer. It's normal that this is causing you a lot of stress especially during this period of uncertainty when you are waiting to find out more. It won't be long now though until you get some definite answers and all you can do for now is wait which is often described here as the hardest thing.

Try to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online as this will only show you all the worst case scenarios. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
