Fitness test

What do they do at the fitness test you have before a operation for oesophagus cancer  ?

  • Probably will check to see if your lungs and heart are healthy. Breathing tests, an echocardiogram, maybe a heart scan (no idea, but do know it's used for chemo), and chest X-ray. Then the usual blood tests to check your liver, and protein levels. The latter affects healing ability.

Don't worry, cancer stress tests don't usually involve doing 5 miles on a treadmill.

  • Haha the treadmill I can do but struggle on bike and see a few say something about a bike

  • When I had a stress echo I was completely wrong-footed by the "bike" – didn't expect to find myself lying on a bed doing the cycling!!  I actually managed that test okay, but was a bit rubbish on the treadmill – didn't get beyond walking before I started seeing stars so they stopped the test and put a chair on the treadmill to ease me into. That wasn't a cancer pre-op so can't say what the cancer tests involve. Just advising that "bike" wasn't what I was expecting ... I'd have worn trousers not a dress if I'd known!

  • Haha that made me giggle. Hope it's not a bike maybe I can practice doing a lying down bike I'm OK on a treadmill as walk a fair bit live in Scarborough so all hills .thanks

  • You sound a lot fitter than me. I thought I was fit (was used to walking several miles at a time) but doctors didn't agree!

If you look at pictures on-line the "bed-bike" is often shown as semi-supine (not sure about practicising horizontal – don't want to give yourself a blood clot), but my recollection is of being more horizontal than pictures.

There is another thread on here (started by RayB and called osophagus cancer), which may be of interest as there are a lot of people linked to that thread who can answer question you posed above from perspective of people who have been through this so are best placed to answer your specific query [@Milly58][@Hilts]‍
