Lump under left rib?

I've been having left sided abdominal pain for months. Originally it was more severe on my left middle side, where my colon is, but recently my whole upper left quadrant has been hurting. I did an abdominal ultrasound last month and nothing was found and have a colonoscopy scheduled in for a month from now.

Last night, I noticed a small lump (hard, maybe 2cm in diameter) right below my left rib (where the bone ends and the rest of the abdomen starts). It's not visible and doesn't hurt to touch, but again, that general area has been hurting. What could this be?

I think that's my transverse colon (from anatomy pictures) but maybe my spleen or stomach? I've asked my doctor for a ct scan while we wait for the colonoscopy but I'm just getting increasingly worried

  • Hello Chaibe,

It's normal to be getting increasingly worried as you are waiting to find out more about this lump. I hope that the colonoscopy will shed some light on what is going on.

Since you've just noticed a new small lump, you've done the right thing in letting your doctor know about it and I hope that you won't need to wait too long for the CT scan and colonoscopy. It is so difficult to wait in a situation like this with every passing day feeling like a lifetime.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
