Son - neck lump biopsy filled with blood

Hi. My Son has had swollen lymph node now for a few months. We went to the doc who put him on a 2 week referral but we attended a private ultrasound scan whilst waiting for the appointment. The scan showed what the doctor thought was a reactive lymph node.he said he would expect it to go down over the next few weeks once his body had fought off whatever it was reacting to. My Son has attended his nhs referral this week (5 weeks after 1st gp appointment) and the doctor took another ultrasound and fine needle biopsy. Apparently she said reactive lymph node but wanted to find out what reacting to. When they did the fine needle biopsy she was surprised as the liquid that came out was blood! My Son said she seemed surprised at this as it's not normally filled with fresh blood? Has anyone experienced this? He also had full bloods done and it's another 3 weeks wait. I am going out of my mind. I'm so anxious about this it is making me poorly all whilst trying to reassure and support him! Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • Iirc lymph node fluid should be clear/cloudy white or yellowish. It contains white blood cells.

  • I think this is why the person doing the Biopsy was surprised and the consultant apparently said ooh you are a medical mystery. It's so difficult because I wasn't allowed to go in with him (he is 19 and for covid reasons a person isn't allowed to attend with the patient) so I'm so anxious now thinking well why was it filled with blood.... and the lump has completely flattened.... it's like the biopsy actually drained the lump!? I'm so confused and reliant on a 19 year old relaying information. So worried. Thanks for your reply. Appreciated x

  • Infection can do many weird and wonderful things. Are they 100% sure it wasn't a cyst? Sounds like what gets drawn from cysts.

  • It's so difficult not being there. I was there for the private scan and he talked me through the shape size little vein thing running through the lymph node so it was deffo the node that was enlarged. He wasn't worried and said reactive lymph. I want allowed to go in with him at this weeks nhs appointment with the endocrine specialist. My Son said she said oooh it's not normally blood (Liam said fresh blood) that comes out. Can you get a cyst in a Lymph node? I feel so lost because if I was there I would have asked questions and retained info. He was attending his appointment in Leeds where he is at Uni so I feel helpless! Thank you for your reply again.
