Ocular Melanoma Symptoms

Hello guys,

Wondering if you can all help with my anxiety.

I've convinced myself I have Ocular Melanoma in my left eye.

Recently, my eye got sun burnt whilst outside painting. Hurt like hell the next day, felt like arc eye. Took couple of days to settle.

That was 2weeks ago. Weekend just just, noticed some floaters in my vision. When I look at them, they disapear.

That was on Sat. On Sunday my eye flared up again, very watery, itchy, sore, went red. My nose was also running, and was outside.

Went to A&e to have my eye checked. They put in yellow eye drops and have a look. Said couldnt see anything.

On close inspection, I noticed a tiny brown freckle in my Iris. Prob around. 5mm in size.

I have brown eyes, fairly tanned. 36.

I'm freaking out, and panicking. I've convinced I have eye cancer. I feel sick. Headache. Can't sleep. Keep shining the light into my eye and looking at the freckle. I assume that's the Melanoma!?

I know this disease metalisic to the liver.

  • Hi FlyingCatfish,

Try to take some reassurance from the fact that you've had this checked out and that they weren't concerned.

If you continue to feel worried or your symptoms continue, the only thing to do is to make an appointment with your GP. They will be best placed to advise, and you can ask them any questions and talk through any concerns to get any answers you need.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi, sorry this response if somewhat late.

I currently have choroidal melanoma (back of the eye) and had more than my normal  amount of flashing and floaters for a few days. This alerted me to get my eyes checked again at the opticians. I have blue eyes and had been previously been told my freckle was nothing to worry about and come back in 2 years! Fortunately it was 16 months at another Opticians where it was picked up. I have had proton beam and the tumour has  started regressing but it is a very long, slow journey, (Nearly a year and the journey is not over yet with my eye).

Try not to over think (which is hard) but Melanoma freckles are usually in blue eyed people, so being brown eyed is favourable  already. You have also identified something  quickly so if it melanoma you have  more than likely caught it early before too large so the outcome is very favourable, unlike those that go undetected for much longer like at the back of the eye.

I very much hope all is ok for you, but  if you continue to have that niggling doubt pursue it  and get a specialist referral. I say this as i met a young lady in the specialist London hopsital who had been repeatedly been told by local GPs that she hadn't got cancer and it was in her eyelid. I have  already learnt that  being so rare many doctors are not specialists in this area to make the call. However, rest assured the NHS have been outstanding in my case when referred to the specialists and will move heaven and high water to sort you out if the need arises. Take care.

  • Can I ask what your symptoms were please? I've been having lots of floaters in my vision and halos around lights. I have a mark on my left eye that I think is growing but my optician said melanoma is dark and this is just a bit of pigment. I also have a freckle in my right eye which I had an ultrasound  and ct on and they said it was less than 2mm x
