Urgent referral following incidental mri findings

Hi,

im new here. I guess that it what alot of people say when they first come onto here.
I recently had an MRI for an ongoing bad back. They have found that I have Pars defect but they incidentally found a large cyst on my overy. The orthopaedic consultant was very vague and didn't snow me the mri images other than for my back. He just said that back wise he wasn't too worried but the radiographer had recommended urgent referral to a gynocology to check things and sort out what is going on but that is literally all they have given me. They also need to refer back to my go for them to refer on which is frustrating as the wait will me longer. I know often people will have an MRI after an ultrasound to confirm and look at the extent so now I am sat here thinking the absolute worst - I don't even know how big this is or which  overy as I think I was abit taken back and didn't think to ask!!
I'm just lost and scared and have no idea what to think!

  • Hi Nataliyaz,

I would hope that even if it is referred back to your GP it will be done quickly. I had a similar thing in I had back pain - went to rheumatology, had an MRI which found a lump in my buttocks, which they did an ultrasound and another MRI before sending me to general surgery via my GP. In my case painfully slow as the lump (still undiagnosed) was classed as benign (not so sure now....) so I was kind of put into the normal queue for waiting. If there is any concerns at all you will get a fast referral. I have to say the day my GP got the letter from the rheumatology department to refer me on - she called me and said she was actioning the referral back straight away. I think I waited about 8 weeks to see someone in the end at general surgery - and I didn't know they had put me on a cancellation list, so I had the surgery within 3 weeks of this consultation. It's the results that are taking forever now!

From what I know GP's are the gate keepers of NHS services - so every referral has to go through them, but as a rule they don't keep you hanging around if treatment is needed quickly.

Let me know how you get on xx
