Worried about 3 year old

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me because I'm going out of my mind with worry.

My 3 year old daughter had bloods done in October and it came back with low iron and high B12. It was brushed off but I have fought to have the tests done again.

She had bloods done again on Saturday and the results have come back to say that her B12 is still high and now her white cells are pretty low (all types).

She is always poorly and has high temperatures regularly, I don't know when she last managed to do a full week of nursery due to illness and she looks exhausted permanently.

The GP won't actually talk to me to discuss my concerns or examine her, but they have requested a repeat blood test in 3 weeks at least. She has lots of raised lymph nodes in her neck, although she is just getting over yet another infection.

We are so worried, stupidly I have looked at Google and it seems to suggest that the most likely explanation is leukaemia. I'm not sure I can cope with another month of not knowing and I don't know what to do.

Am I worrying unnecessarily and/or is there something I can be doing in the meantime?

Thanks for any advice,

Worried mummy

  • Hello Florence12

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has been struggling with being well for some time now. It's perfectly natural that you're worried about why this may be and if there is some underlying cause.

Unfortunately, we know that many people who turn to Google for information are led down a path that inevitably leaves them feeling even more worried and still without actual answers. Please do avoid searching the internet for information if you can. It won't help your daughter feel better but it will leave you feeling worse.

It's good to hear that your GP is following up again with the blood tests in a few weeks although I can understand your frustration if they're not communicating with you. Don't be afraid to talk to the practice manager if you feel that you're struggling to get information from the Dr.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our team of nruses you're welcome to call them. I'm sure they'll be happy to offer any advice and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you have some news soon and that things start to improve for your daughter.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thank you so much for your kind reply.

I did email the doctor with my concerns and thankfully he called me the next day to discuss things and then asked me to take her for an examination.

She has lots of swollen nodes in her neck which he is asking to be scanned which makes me more worried - but equally he did a very good of going over the blood results etc and making me feel more reassured.

I feel less helpless now for having done something and making sure my concerns were heard and acted upon.

Now just the waiting game for more tests and results with lots of finger crossing.
