Lower back, stomach and pelvic pain days after smear

Hello, I'm looking for some advice. I am 28 (nearly 29) and have 3 children. My youngest was born at the end of January. I had my second smear on Monday, during the examination the nurse hurt me as she took my swab and she made me bleed and I had spotting for a few days after. I have also since had horrible pains in my lower back, my lower stomach and pelvic area. I'm not sure why I'm feeling this pain, I never experienced this when I had my first, didn't even feel it then. The nurse said my cervix looks clear to the eye. I'm just concerned incase I have abnormal cells come back. She told me it's going to take up to 6 weeks for my results because covid has had a major set back on things and they're still trying to catch up. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you

  • I'm sorry about the symptoms you've been experiencing since you had your cervical screening Mamatoa1yearold.

If these pains don't improve over the next week or so, it may be worth getting in touch with your nurse or GP to get this checked, if only for peace of mind.

Hopefully some of our members will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon but in the meantime, I hope this article I've found on how to cope with waiting for news will help keep your nerves at bay whilst you wait for your results.

Fingers crossed for good news Mamatoa1yearold.

  • Thank you for your reply. It's now been 16 days since I had my smear done. My results came as low risk but I am still experiencing sharp pains and cramps in my lower stomach and pelvic area. I have tried to contact my gp to discuss this a few times but have been unable to get an appointment and just get told to call back again the next morning which I do but still not able to get an appointment. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

  • I'm glad you received good results Mamatoa1yearold although I'm sorry you're still experiencing these pains and cramps.

I'm also sorry that you're struggling to see your GP. This must be very frustrating but do keep trying as they're the only ones who can tell you whether this is any cause for concern. If you still have no luck, you could try seeking medical advice from the NHS on 111.

Our team of nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to discuss this with them as well.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help but I really do hope you're able to get this resolved soon.

    Kind regards,
