HPV and Low-grade dyskaryosis

Hey ladies,

I've received smear test result letter today as well which advised that I'm HPV positive with low grade dyskaryosis.

I am a little confused  and I was wondering if anyone else is a similar case to mine or if they asked the question to the nurse/doctor who performed your colposcopy.

My previous smear test was in 2019 and was negative but this one (done in the beginning of April 2022) came back not only positive but also with low grade dyskaryosis'. So I keep wondering how a result can change in those 3 years when nothing has changed in that space of time  for me as I've been to a monogamous and very committed relationship for the past 17 years...

I'm a 40 year old, healthy and very active individual.

Thank you ladies!

  • Hello Hedwig1981,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. Try not to worry too much about your result as so many ladies here have received the very same letter telling them they were HPV positive and that they had low grade dyskaryosis. The change in your result is unlikely to be related to your personal situation - these cells can change over time and you can read more about this and about treatment for abnormal cervical cells on this page. Macmillan have a very good page on HPV which may explain things further for you and tell you more about how it spreads. I hope this will reassure you but if you have any questions or want to understand more about HPV, feel free to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I will now let our members who have been in a similar situation come and say hello and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello,

I am in the same boat, Low grade dyskaryosis and of course i am HPV positive.

I was told on my first smear i was HPV then after a year you are then checked again but they check for dyskaryosis on the 2nd yearly test.

I had my colposcopy this last Tues and it looks like my cell changes are actually worse than we thought.

I have been told when my biospys come back i will have to have treatment regardless, the Dr just wants to see how bad it is.

    xx
